Thrilling Thursdays Giveaway: Comment Away, Deluxers!

Like my new nickname for members?  I think I’ll keep it.

I’m pleased to announce the official rules for the first weekly Thrilling Thursdays Giveaway/Contest!  This giveaway will require a little more of you than the first, but not by much.  Here are the details:

  • To “enter” this giveaway, all you have to do is leave a relevant comment on any post here at The Conservative Journal or e-mail me a question or response to any article.  This doesn’t have to be 12 paragraphs with a clearly defined thesis, just make sure you actually add something to the article your commenting on or e-mailing me about.  You can easily do this in as little as one sentence.
  • This contest is only open to Conservative Journal Deluxe Members.  As always, anyone is welcome to comment and send in questions/responses on articles, but only Deluxe Members who comment will be put into the drawing.  If you aren’t currently a member and would like to join, click here to read the details and become a member now!  It’s free and extremely easy to do.
  • For this competition, you will only be entered 1 time regardless of the number of comments you post.  Commenting multiple times is great and appreciated, but until I can see how a basic “Thrilling Thursday” competition runs I don’t want to get too crazy; in the words of Bon Qui Qui.
  • Be sure and comment under the same e-mail address you used to sign up for Conservative Journal Deluxe.  That’s the only way I can confirm you are a member and therefore eligible for the prize.
  • As far as technicalities, each Deluxe Member is assigned a number in the database of members for all giveaways.  I will use random.org to generate a random number until the number of a user who commented is chosen.  That user will be crowned the winner of this giveaway and will be notified through e-mail before I announce it on the site.  If the winner doesn’t respond to the “congratulations” e-mail in 48 hours, I will generate another number and will notify that winner.  If that winner doesn’t claim his/her prize in 48 hours, I will keep the prize and use it in the next giveaway.

The Prize

Now what everyone’s been waiting for…. the prize!  The winner of this giveaway will receive a $100 Amazon.com Gift Card sent to the inbox of the e-mail I have on file as soon as he or she responds to the congratulations e-mail.  That’s why it’s important to be sure you actually used an e-mail address you check when signing up for Conservative Journal Deluxe!  Of course, the Thrilling Thursday prize won’t always be this much, but this is the first one so I decided to splurge.

Here are the highlights:

Contest: Commenting Giveaway
Time frame: 9/23- 10/1
Open to: Conservative Journal Deluxe Members Only
Prize: $100 Amazon.com Gift Card

If you have any questions, please ask!  Leave your comments below or send an e-mail to theconservativejournal@gmail.com.  Don’t forget to bookmark The Conservative Journal and sign up for the RSS Feed and the daily e-mail newsletter.

September 23rd News Bits and Pieces: Mackenzie Phillips, ACORN, Swine Flu, and Michael Jackson

News and Politics

Giant Squid Found in Gulf, Oregon

Gah, that thing is huge!  I wish there were more people in the private sector who were willing to search for creatures as fascinating as the giant squid.  If I had unlimited money, I’d be sure and set apart a good portion of it to search for bizarre creatures like the Loch Ness Monster and Bigfoot.

Palin Knocks Fed in Hong Kong Speech

I’m glad to hear that those who got to see the speech felt like she at least knew what she was talking about.  My rational mind is telling me otherwise, but I just want to believe that Sarah Palin is still a viable candidate for the presidency.  I’m sure I’ll take flack for this from the more center-left-of-center readers (if there are any), but I do think she’d be a great president if she spent a few years in the senate getting more familiar with foreign affairs and the technicalities of the office of the presidency.  But then again, I’m overly optimistic.

ACORN Sues Filmmakers

I sure hope this lawsuit proves unsuccessful because then I’ll lose all faith in our government.  I figured ACORN would pursue the lawsuit, but I’m just hoping the judge it appears before has enough sense to send it back out the door.

CNN’s Gupta Gets H1N1 Flu in Afghanistan

Mackenzie Phillips Reveals She Slept With Her Own Father

This really is a shame.  It’s hard to imagine that someone could get so into drugs that she has a 10 year affair with her father.  I wish Mackenzie the best and hope that hopefully she’s cleaned up her act.  If I’m remembering correctly she had a very interesting singing voice, and I hope she hasn’t totally lost it.

New Michael Jackson Single, ‘This Is It,’ Out On October 12

I don’t really know how I feel about a song being released after the artists death.  Chances are I won’t like the song anyway so it doesn’t really matter.

The Fray’s second single from their third album FAR surpasses the overplayed debut single, “You Found Me”.  It’s about 1 million times better, to say the least.  Listen to the nice, piano-infused song below:

I wonder if they were long time employees or did they just start?

Generally, these posts will run on Sundays, as that’s the beginning of the week.  I realize that posting this on Tuesday isn’t quite as effective, but I just decided I’d do it a few minutes ago.  These posts will just contain the high points of what to expect during the week.  The content scheduling may change, and many posts not listed will be posted throughout the week.  Here’s a quick overview:

Wednesday

  • Check This Out: Get a look at the latest hot blog that received the “Check This Out Award”!

Thursday

  • Look for a recap of “Fringe” and review of the Kings of Leon’s latest album “Only By the Night”.  The usual recaps of “Parks and Recreation”, “Weekend Update”, and “The Office” will come on Friday or Saturday, as I will be out of the house during their air time on Thursday.  Also, make sure you stop by Thursday to see the details on the “Thrilling Thursday” content for the week.

Friday

  • Chances are, posting will be light on Friday, if not non-existent.  As of now, I think I’ll be working late again Friday, but I’ll let you know if these changes.

Saturday

  • Look for a “Fireside Chat” with an American who became a fan of Barack during the campaign and is now deeply regretting his decision.  This one’s sure to be interesting!

Song of the Day: “Live Like You Were Dying” by Kris Allen (New Single)

Here’s Kris Allen’s first single after winning American Idol, “Live Like You Were Dying”.  I like it, it’s not anything revolutionary, but it’s a fun song that I can see myself listening to while driving home from work.  I’ll probably even sing along.  Listen to the song below:

September 21st News Bits and Pieces: Bill Clinton, ACORN, Scams, and Republicans

News and Politics

Groups spar over U.S. offshore drilling plan

As I said in a post earlier today, I’m in big support of offshore drilling.  The benefits far outweigh whatever costs anyone can come up with.  And I’m very happy to hear that the off shore drilling bans in place for 20 years were allowed to expire without renewal.  Hopefully we can get some new rigs set up and begin drilling on our own soil ASAP.

‘The Clinton Tapes,’ a New Book

I can’t wait for this to come out.  I think it’s going to be fascinating to read if even half of the hype is true.  As for the claims that the writer thinks Clinton is probably worried, I doubt that’s any more than his way of building hype.  But either way, I think it’s going to be a great read that I’ll be sure and review for readers of The Conservative Journal.  The book is set for release on September 28th.

Democratic fundraiser indicted in NY

Surprise, surprise.  Yet another corrupt bimbo to deal with accordingly.  I hope that people become more wary of scams like this one, but you never know.  Can’t wait to see where this case from here and I’m sure more information will come out as time goes on.

Justice Department Reviews Ties to Acorn

The pressure was finally put on ACORN and we’re finally seeing results.  I don’t know what this investigation will hold as I didn’t know the Justice Department would have ever been tied to ACORN, but I’m glad they’re at least looking into it.

ANALYSIS-Republicans see opportunities in 2010

I think the claims by “top republicans” that the republican party could take back control of the house might be a bit of a long shot, but I do see the republican party making great strides in 2010.  I see the party gaining seats in the house and probably 1 or 2 in the senate.  As said in the article, the Governor races in November should be good indicators.

Entertainment

Kate Gosselin Confirms Talk Show, PopEater Readers Aren’t Digging It

I’m digging it either.  I think the Gosselin family needs to pull out of the spotlight and deal with family matters before going through with any other business ventures.  They’ve got 8 kids to take care of and there’s no way they’re doing that with Jon’s laziness and Kate’s work-aholicness.  They better have a good nanny.

World’s Hairiest Man Having ‘Pretty Monkey’ Surgery

Well I’m glad he’s getting that taken care of, I’m sure he’s pretty self-conscious because of it.

EnergyFLA: Securing Florida’s Future Through Energy Exploration, Part 1

This is the first in a multi-part series that expresses my support and gives the details of EnergyFLA, a group that is making efforts to allow exploration for energy sources off of Florida’s cost.

Question:  What’s a great way to increase energy production domestically, increase tax revenues, and produce jobs?  A good answer to that question is energy exploration in our own waters, and that’s just what EnergyFLA is trying to do.

EnergyFLA is a group of Floridians (is that what you call them?) that are coming together to push for oil exploration in Florida’s waters.  When you look at the facts and figures behind their mission, there’s really no argument against it.  Here’s a brief overview before I delve into the intense statistics in the next post:

  • Increased jobs for Florida.  I don’t live in Florida, but you can’t argue against an increase in jobs anywhere during this tough time.  The money paid for work done on this project would quickly be back in the states bank account by the massive revenue increase the drilling would bring about, so it’s not like Florida would be printing money it doesn’t, or won’t, have.
  • General Decrease in Gas Prices. If Florida proves to be a great source of energy, the United States would have an increased domestic supply, allowing us to rely less on countries in OPEC, therefore giving us more freedom over our gas prices.
  • Increased Revenue, Same Taxes. Conservative estimates show that the state of Florida could see a $31 billion increase in revenue over a 20 year period if offshore drilling is explored.  At a time when many are considering tax hikes to make up for deficits, this could be exactly what they need to push that budget out of the red.
  • More Reliability and Durability. With a ban placed on drilling from the shore to 10.35 miles out, Florida relies on other sources to get its fuel.  Nearly all of Florida’s fuel arrives to the state through merely 2 pipelines.  This leaves the state vulnerable to massive shortages of fuel if disaster were to strike.  During Katrina, for instance, the entire state nearly experienced a “blackout” of fuel due to pipeline damage.  Drilling off the shores of Florida would provide many more entry points for fuel into the state.
  • The Fuel is There, Why Not Use it? It’s been proven that the oil is there, some studies show that Florida’s oil fields rival those of East Texas.  Jay and Blackjack fields hold enough fuel for 1 billion barrels, the Sunniland region holds a similar amount, and right in between the 3 is 4.5 million acres of unexplored ocean floor that is sure to hold billions more barrels of fuel.

With all these statistics and facts showing the promise of offshore drilling in Florida, it seems clear that this is a necessary step we must take in the face of declining oil production and a shrinking economy.  If you’re a resident of Florida, be sure and let your state representative know that you support offshore drilling and all of it’s many benefits!

To visit the online headquarters for EnergyFLA, click here.  Be sure and look for my next post on the EnergyFLA project, where I’ll answer questions sent in by you, the readers.  If you have any questions, e-mail them to me at theconservativejournal@gmail.com.

Song of the Day: “Happy” by Leona Lewis (New Single Live on America’s Got Talent)

I was a big fan of Leona Lewis on the X-Factor (Yes, I did watch that), and I was also a fan of most of the stuff on her first CD, and there’s no denying she’s got a great voice.  The new song,  “Happy”, is different, and I’m not crazy about it now, but I think it’ll grow on me.  Listen below and decide for yourself if you like today’s song of the day:
