AMA 2009: Carrie Underwood, Lady GaGa, Kelly Clarkson Continue to Impress

To vote in the AMA Performance Poll, click here.

Since I had nothing else to do tonight, I decided I’d watch the AMA’s.  That show made me realize just how well-done the CMA’s.  Anyway, this year’s AMA’s came across as more of a concert series than an awards show, since awards were given out in the 5 second transitions between performers.  Here are the highlights (and lowlights):

Great:

  • Carrie Underwood delivered another knock-out performance of “Cowboy Casanova,” this time with even more dancers.  The vocals for this one were spot-on.  This was probably the best overall performance she’s given of this song so far.  The general mediocrity of the majority of the other performers made her look even better than she did on her own merit.
  • Kelly Clarkson gave an outstanding rendition of “Already Gone” without all of the bells and whistles of the studio version.  She reminds us all that she’s still got it, despite less-than-stellar live performances in the past few years (see, “Never Again” live on AI).
  • The one and only Lady Gaga convinced me to look at her new album, The Fame Monster (in stores tomorrow), after wowing in her performance of “Bad Romance”/”Speechless.”  I’m thinking “Bad Romance” may have been at the very least partially lip-synced, but “Speechless” was the real deal and it was great.  Not to mention Gaga is incredibly entertaining.
  • Alicia Keys shined during her two performances, both of which made up for her disappointingly bland lead-off single from her latest album.

Good/Okay:

  • The Black Eyed Peas performed an unrecognizable medley of their latest hits because apparently they’ve spent half a year at #1?  On what chart?  Regardless, that’s a huge accomplishment.  And while the whole performance came together as a bunch of noise and lights, Fergie still showed everyone that she can and does sing quite well.  If only we could hook her up with another gig singing Heart covers (see, Idol Gives Back).
  • Former Idol-contestant Chris Daughtry performed his latest single “Life After You.”  I can’t fault the vocals, but I can say it was incredibly boring and unmemorable.  It’s only been an hour since I watched and I have no idea what the song sounded like.
  • Life-long divas Mary J. Blige and Whitney Houston delivered good performances (in comparison to their “norm”) and Houston was honored with some international award accomplishment.  I’m glad she’s trying to turn things around.

The Bad

  • Janet Jackson got the first ten minutes of the show to lip-sync and dance around sporadically.  Could’ve used that ten minutes to allow the latest American Idol Kris Allen winner and the immensely talented teen star Demi Lovato to perform instead of reducing them to lowly presenters.
  • Perez Hilton was in attendance and was allowed to speak.
  • Taylor Swift once again sweeped all of her categories and gave acceptance speeches “live” from the UK.  Doubt it.  They were obviously pre-taped and Taylor acted surprised the whole time.  I don’t really think MJ deserved “Artist of the Year” more, but I certainly don’t think he deserved it less.  Gaga should have won it.
  • Green Day cracks and squeels through “21 Guns,” causing me to wonder if and why people still listen to that crap.
  • And finally, the worst part of the night was Adam Lambert’s atrocious and over-hyped show closing performance of “For Your Entertainment.”  Suggestive dance moves aside, the vocals were terrible.  He sounded like 40’s-era versions of Mortimer Mouse (Mickey’s cousin or whatever) on helium.  Not to mention he fell and then made out with some ambiguously gendered keyboarder midway through.  I just ask that I not be subjected to gay porn while I’m trying to eat a bowl of mini-wheats.  Thank you.

New Contest: Win a Free Copy of “Play On” by Carrie Underwood!

My love and support for Carrie Underwood have been quite evident over the past year that I have been blogging.  She was one of the first to be inducted The Conservative Journal Hall of Fame and her songs have been featured many times as the song of the day.  To celebrate my “re”-arrival onto the blogging scene and the release of Carrie’s third album, I will be giving 10 lucky readers a free copy of the CD!  As I stated in my “welcome back me” post, I’ve been extremely busy and unfortunately it’s caused me to be absent from The Conservative Journal for the past month.  To thank those of you that have continued to follow the site even in my absence, I’ll be doing more of these themed giveaways in the future.  Here are the details:

  • For the first time at The Conservative Journal, this contest is open to EVERYONE.  However, Conservative Journal Deluxe Members will be automatically entered and will receive double entries into the drawing for any additional entry method they use.  The full details of how points will work is listed below.  If you aren’t currently a member and would like to join, click here to read the details and become a member now!  It’s free and extremely easy to do.
  • To enter for your chance to win you can do any of the following:
    1. The easiest way to enter is to become a Conservative Journal Deluxe Member.  That grants you automatic entry and not to mention 2 points for each additional entry method rather than 1.
    2. Commenting on any article at The Conservative Journal or sending an e-mail response or submission grants you 1 entry into the drawing.  Anyone may do this, but make sure to use your real e-mail address when commenting or e-mailing so I can contact you in the event that you win.
    3. Tweet about the release of “Play On”.  Let your friends and followers know about Carrie and you will receive 1 entry.  Make sure to put “@TCJournalUpdate” somewhere in your post so I can easily find your entry.
    4. Write a blog post about Carrie Underwood or “Play On” and you will receive 1 entry into the contest.  Make your either put a link to the contest in the blog post or notify me you made the post so I can easily find it.
  • Non-members can earn up to 3 entries using any of the above methods.  Those who are members and receive the daily newsletter (you get it when you c0nfirm your membership e-mail) may receive up to 6 entries using any combination of the above methods.  Remember, members automatically earn 1 entry for being members and will receive 2 entries for each additional entry method.
  • Winners may take their pick of receiving either a digital copy or a hard copy shipped to you directly from Amazon.
  • As far as technicalities, each entry is assigned a number in the database of members for all giveaways.  I will use random.org to generate a random number until 10 unique e-mails of those who participated are chosen.  Those users will be crowned the winners of this giveaway and will be notified through e-mail.  The winners will also be announced on the site one hour after the contest has expired.  As winners confirm the congratulations e-mail, I will mark their names off the list.  If the winners don’t respond to the “congratulations” e-mail and provide shipping addresses (if needed) in 48 hours, I will generate another number and will notify the new winners.  If the new winners don’t claim his/her prize in 48 hours, I will keep the prize and use it in the next giveaway.

Music Review: Carrie Underwood’s Latest Single “Cowboy Casanova”

I love the interweb.  Without it, Carrie Underwood’s latest single, “Cowboy Casanova”, from her upcoming album Play On (in stores November 3!) wouldn’t be out until the 8th.  I discovered it late last night and listened to it a few times and then woke up and listened to it some more.  She’s truly got an amazing voice.  Anyway, on to the song….

To the top of the charts, and beyond!

When I first listened to “Cowboy Casanova”, I must admit I wasn’t sold.  However, upon third listen, I was hooked.  Fans of Carrie will no doubt find it impossible to tear themselves away from the beat and incredible vocals, and new fans will be drawn in by the brilliant hook.  I see “Cowboy Casanova” rivaling, if not passing, “Before He Cheats” in the success department, but not necessarily because I think it’s a better song.  We all know there will always only be one “Before He Cheats” and it is epic.  However, “Cowboy Casanova” is nearly as strong a song PLUS it’s a first single, and those tend to perform exceptionally well on the charts.  The excitement from the release of Play On in November and all of the promotion will probably give Carrie her best shot at #1 on the Hot 100 with this song, unless of course she has some KILLER songs on the album, which I don’t doubt.

Rocking Carrie > Everything

As for the actual song, “Cowboy Casanova” breaks Carrie’s pattern of more sentimental lead-off singles in a big way.  It starts off with a bumpin’ beat and some intense strings and then Carrie tears into the vocals.  People that are more technically educated in singing can correct me if I’m wrong, but these vocals might be some of Carrie’s most soaring yet.   The song also incorporates the more rock vibe Carrie has been known to infuse in concert performances and, of course, my favorite performance she’s ever done: “Last Name” from the Grammys last year.

If “Cowboy Casanova” is any indication of the style of songs we’ll find on Play On, more country/pop/rock, I expect it to be closer in succes to Some Hearts than Carnival Ride. Carrie’s got a monster hit on her hands and if her promotion team can get it together (They’ve never impressed me), she could ride this one all the way to the top of The Hot 100.

The Verdict

Carrie is awesome and “Cowboy Casanova” is rocking.  Of course it makes the TCJ Playlist!

The Rating

9 out of 10 Elephants

Carrie Underwood’s Latest Single “Cowboy Casanova”: Hear It Now!

After much anticipation for the release of the lead-off single to her new album, Carrie sneaks up and surprises everyone by releasing it late last night.  So without further ado, the lead single off Play On, in stores November 3!

It took a couple of listens, but this song is growing on me.  Carrie has some crazy pipes and I could see this having mass radio success.  Look for a full review of the song later today.

American Idol Finale Performances Recap

This….. is…… American Idol!  Sorry, I had to.  I hadn’t done that yet this season I don’t think.  Anyway, Season 8 comes down to this, the final six competition performances of the year.  I’m sure it’ll be epic.  Hmm.

Ryan reminds us to all fix our DVRs for the finale runover, but I will predict now that millions of people will still flock to message boards to complain.  First up is…

Adam Lambert singing “Mad World” by Tears for Fears for his re-do performance.  What’s up with the cape, man?  Haha, and the dramatic fog screens going across the floor?  This is over the top without even trying to be.  But in all seriousness, this is good.  I think it’s better than the first time he did it overall.  There aren’t any small bum notes anywhere, which is always a plus.  I’m not seeing the big twist that we heard he was going to do, but it was still good.  Not your typical Adam Lambert here.  Randy gave it an A+ and loved the fog machines, Kara said he is an incredible artist, Paula told him to bask in it, and Simon thought it was over theatrical like Phantom of the Opera.  Next up is…

Kris Allen singing “Ain’t No Sunshine” by Bill Withers for his re-do performance.  Kris has really nice parents, I really like them.  I will probably miss them more than anyone this season, except for Allison.  And Meghan.  So nevermind.  Anyway, this has been one of my favorite performances from Kris this year, so I’m glad he went with this one.  It’s more understated than his other two, so it’ll be good to bring it back to the fore front.  Great performance.  This is more my kind of thing.  Really good ending, too.  Randy thought it was one of his best ever, Kara complicated his ability to make an intimate bond, Paula says something about “Allenizing” things, and Simon said he had doubted America’s choice last week, but now he takes it all back.

I’d have to give that round to Kris, and Simon agrees with me.  I always knew Simon knew what he was talking about.

Adam Lambert singing “A Change is Gonna Come” by Patti LaBelle and Sam Cook for Simon Fuller’s choice.  Wow, this is really good, I’ve gotta say.  He’s hitting some big ole notes as usual, but it seems to work well for this song.  I enjoyed this much more than the first one.  It’s one of my favorite Adam performances of the year for sure.  There’s more substance to it than usual screech fest.  The judges pretty much all thought that it was his best ever, and Simon said he was definitely back in the game.  Next up is…

Kris Allen singing “What’s Going On” by Marvin Gaye for Simon Fuller’s choice.  This is very Kris Allen, to quote Paula.  A very cool pop sound to this one, which is definitely what he should go with after Idol.  I think this performance is proof that he has the most potential radio success after Idol from anyone this season.  It’s not his best, but I could imagine hearing it on the radio.  Randy thought it was a little light for him, Kara like the song choice and thought he delivered a message, Paula thought he “tore it up” and made Marvin Gaye proud, and Simon thought it was like 3 friends in a bedroom strumming along to Marvin Gaye and too laid back for a finale.

Simon gave that round a million percent to Adam.  I think it goes to Adam as well, but not by a million percent.

Oh great, now the epic coronation song is up.  I can’t wait to see that one.  Not.

Adam Lambert singing “No Boundaries”, this year’s coronation song written by Kara DioGuardi.  This song typical Idol cheese, limburger to be exact.  He’s doing a great job vocally, though it gets a little shouty in the end.  Not typical Adam “screech” just shouty.  This song is going to kill Kris unless they allowed them to change it up.  Good vocal for Adam, though not the most captivating performance.  Randy thought it was pitchy, Kara gave herself a shout out for writing it (Come on Kara), Paula will forever be his fan, and Simon made fun of the song, but said Adam has been one of the best and most original ever.  Next up is…

Kris Allen singing “No Boundaries” as well.  Unless Kris can change it up it’s going to kill him.  Well, the beginning was really good!  In the middle it kind of fell a part a bit, but he got it back together.  I actually really liked that.  The song didn’t kill him like I thought it would.  Adam’s always got him beat as far as range and ability, but Kris knows what he can do and does it really well.  Randy thought the key was high, but said he was amazing; Kara said he is a compelling artist and incredible person; Paula said he’s done an amazing job this season and deserved every bit of it; and Simon said the first was his best, but watching him as been incredible because he has improved so much.

Now the real reason everyone’s watching American Idol tonight…

Carrie Underwood singing the good-bye song “Home Sweet Home”.  Carrie’s looking great back on the Idol stage!  Great performance of “Home Sweet Home” by Carrie.  I think this just proves that she is the greatest winner of American Idol.  She is one of the only people that actually sound better live than in the studio.  I will always be a fan.  I give the night to Carrie Underwood!

What did you think of tonight’s show?  Who do you think will be winning tomorrow night?

TCJ Seal of Approval: Carrie Underwood!

I have been trying to think of a way to say something about Carrie Underwood on this blog for some time now.  It finally came to me about 3 minutes ago that Ms. Underwood is definitely deserving of the prestigious Conservative Journal Seal of Apporval!

Ever since Carrie Underwood won the 4th season of American Idol, she has accomplished great things in the music industry, as well as in the world.  Her first album, Some Hearts, was certified 7x platinum (That’s shipping over 7 million CDs for those that aren’t hip on the lingo), and produced 4 number 1 singles in a row.  Her smash hit, “Before He Cheats”, became the first country song to sell over 2 million digital downloads.  Her second album, Carnival Ride, has sold nearly 3 million copies and produced 5 number 1 singles, making her one of the only artists in history to have 10 consecutive #1’s.  Also worth noting is her recent win as Entertainer of the Year, joining the ranks of only a handful of females to ever win that top honor.

But the reason she wins this award isn’t for her Grammys, her ACMs, her CMAs, or anything else.  It’s because she’s remained a moral, Christ-like person through the rigors of extreme fame.  Since winning American Idol 4 years ago, I have yet to hear one time about Carrie Underwood getting drunk and wild at the club.  Carrie hasn’t been caught in a sex-tape scandal.  She hasn’t posed nude for any kind of magazine.  She’s remained grounded despite her enormous successes.  Taking a quick glance at the celebrity scene, it’s hard to pick out more than 1 or 2 that rival Carrie in handling their rise to fame well.  It’s truly a testament to Carrie’s faith that she has managed not to stray from the path she was on pre-Idol.  But of course, we can’t leave out her parents, who equally deserve this award for instilling in their daughter such great Christian values.  Maybe they should receive the next Seal of Approval?

American Idol Top 3 Prediction and Analysis

If you missed last night’s show, you can read the full recap of the episode here.

Best Performance of the Night: Kris Allen singing Heartless

Best Performance of the Night: Kris Allen singing "Heartless"

Who should go? Danny

Who will go? Danny

I have one thing to say before I begin breaking down who I think will go home and why: The show would have been better with AllisonDanny was fair/good for both of his songs, while Allison no doubt would have been great/outstanding.  Just like with Carly Smithson’s (click here to follow her on twitter) early departure last year, I’m still bitter.

Prior upsets aside, let’s get to the upset at hand; If Danny Gokey makes it to the finals in anyway, I will be upset.  And not really because he would eliminate either Kris or Adam from the finale, but because he doesn’t deserve it.  Danny is basically the second coming of Taylor Hicks, who by the way is currently playing a minor character in the production of Grease.  Last night, both Adam and Kris outsang and outperformed Danny on each of their songs.  Not only that, but Danny has next to zero commercial potential.  Sure he will sell to his fans that are supporting him on the show, but he doesn’t have the voice to receive mainstream success like Carrie Underwood, Kelly Clarkson, Daughty, etc.  I could see Danny taking a career path similar to Mandisa as a Christian music artist, which is certainly a great path to go down.  Hot 100 radio is just not calling Danny‘s name.

On to the results:  ultimately, I do think Danny Gokey will be leaving us tonight.  For the second week in a row Danny has been the obvious weakest link.  Last week his mysterious fan base carried him through after a wretched screaming rendition of “Dream On”, and this week he wasn’t nearly as bad.  But will they carry him through again underservingly?  My intial guess is no.  If you look back on American Idol, when performers are pulled throught to the next round after a really bad performance, the next week is usually there time to go if they don’t deliver a knockout.  Look at Brooke White last year.  Her start-and-stop dilemma pulled here through (over Carly Smithson, I might add) to the Top 5, but she was then eliminated the next week after performances that were on par to her usual.  Add with that the fact that Adam Lambert and Kris Allen outperformed him by a mile, I think the top 2 is quite clear.

Adam received numerous praise all around from the judges on both performances, and even got a little boost from Simon when he reminded everyone to vote for him because he deserves it and not just assume he will be safe.  Kris also received praise on his second performance of Kanye West’s “Heartless”, which I must say was brilliant.  I think that performance alone produced enough buzz to carry Kris through.  So when it comes down to it tonight, I feel fairly confident that Danny will be leaving us tonight.  Check back here later for a recap and reaction to tonight’s results by bookmarking The Conservative Journal or by subscribing to the RSS Feed and the daily e-mail newsletter to get updates when something new is posted.

Top 3 Scoreboard

  • Kris Allen, “Heartless”-  A+ (Only one of the season)
  • Adam Lambert, “Cryin”- A-
  • Danny Gokey, “You Are So Beautiful”- B
  • Adam Lambert, “One”- B-
  • Kris Allen, “Apologize”- B-
  • Danny Gokey, “Dance Little Sister”- C
