Mail Bag: I’m Behind, I Know

I’ve gotten a lot of great comments and e-mails over the last few weeks, and I’m behind on posting them.  So this “Mail Bag” is probably going to be pretty lengthy.  Thanks everyone that commented and sent e-mails!

Here is something Matt C. e-mailed me that I thought was pretty great.  The message details what happened pre-George Bush that played a big part in the financial crisis:

I keep hearing that the Bush economic policy was to blame for the economic crisis we now face. Lord knows Bush’s budgets were way out of line, even though he had 9/11, Wars, Katrina, Power Outages in NYC and the like (secondary causes of recession). The fact is that the primary culprit behind the economic crisis was the statist policies from Carter & Slick Willy that Bush inherited:

1977 CRA Community Reinvestment Act – The act provided that banks have an “affirmative obligation” to meet the credit needs of the communities in which they are chartered.

1989 Congress amended the Home Mortgage Disclosure Act requiring banks to collect racial data on Mortgage applications.

1995 Treasury Department issued regulations tracking loans by neighborhoods, income groups, and races to rate the performance of banks. The ratings were used by regulators to determine whether the government would approve bank mergers, acquisitions, and new branches. It also encouraged statist-aligned groups, such as the Association of Community Organizations for Reform (ACORN) and the Neighborhood Assistance Corporation of America, to file petitions with regulators, or threaten to slow or even prevent banks from conducting their business by challenging the extent to which banks were issuing these loans. With such powerful leverage over banks, some groups were able, in effect, to legally extort banks to make huge pools of money available to the groups, money they in turn used to make loans.

The Banks and community groups issued loans to low-income individuals who often had bad credit or insufficient income. And these loans, which became known as “Subprime” loans, made available 100% financing, did not always require the use of credit scores, and were even made without documenting income. Basically, the government insisted that banks abandon traditional underwriting standards if the bank wanted to grow. Not to mention that in 1992 Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae were pressured by the HUD to purchase large bundles of these loans for the conflicting purposes of diversifying the risk and making even more money available to banks to make further risky loans.

Congress also passed the Federal Housing Enterprises Financial Safety and Soundness Act which eventually mandated that these companies by 45% of all loans from people of low and moderate incomes. The Treasury Department also established the Community Development Financial Institutions Fund, which provided banks with tax dollars to encourage even more risky loans.

When you add derivatives and Greenspan into the mix, you have an economic crisis, not just a housing/banking crisis. This cannot be blamed on Just President Bush by any stretch of the imagination. I am not at all excusing Bush from any responsibility. He made his share of mistakes. But to insist that he was entirely to blame ignores years of damaging statist government intervention.

Internet sensation Susan Boyle also sparked much discussion at The Conservative Journal:

Joel & Brenda said:

GOD bless her!  oops!!  HE already has!!!

Chrisee said:

As they say when God closes a door he opens up a window,it is said that she told her mother upon her death bed that she would enter this contest, and as they also say it is so,you see it doesn’t matter what anyone else thinks of you in life, What he has out there for you, nobody can take away or stop you,the people were laughing in the beginning, but that was his child out there as we all are,but he who laughs first most certainly will laugh last,See you in concert,Ms.Susan Boyle, most of us can’t wait, for all those people who picked on you in life,he said he would make your enemy your footstool, believe me it has already happened, wish I could be at your next high school reunion

Sharlee said:

BEAUTIFUL!!
It just goes to show that you should NEVER judge a person by there looks alone!! Think of the talent we would have missed if they didn’t give her a chance. BRAVO Susan. Toronto Ontario, Canada.

Shirley S. had this to say about Levi Johnston:

Levi Johnson states that people think his family is white trash??  I am a believer based on his and their choice to expose personal information about their governor’s family.  In fact, the Johnsons seem to be working overtime to set a new standard for trashy.  How disgusting to talk like that about someone he was supposed to love.  As they say, he has had his 15 minutes.  Now it is time for him to shut his big mouth and move on.
Obviously, he has no consideration for what his child will endure in the future because of his “revelations”, and also obvious is that he does not care.  It doesn’t have anything to do with who the Palins are.  They are people just like the rest of us.  Most people only see now what a jerk he has become or probably always was.  Bristol just did not realize it.  What I find amusing is how he thinks this will help his relationship with his son.   He sure saved Bristol’s life by turning his back on her, and he sure gave the right reason.  What a grossly immature person Levi Johnson is.

Meghan Is Taking Her Father’s Maverick Label Too Seriously

Cheif Maverick with young apprentice maverick in the background.

Cheif Maverick with young apprentice maverick in the background.

Meghan McCain is like the little engine that keeps on.   No, I don’t mean “the little engine that could”, that’s cliche.  Here is an example of a little engine that “keeps on”:  Imagine the most socially awkward person you know.  Now think about how that person constantly tries to get a laugh/simple acknowledgment from everyone they come in contact with.  No matter how many times they tell a joke, it would never be funny.  They should just give it, but they are persistant to the point that it becomes pitiful.  Does that not sum up Meghan McCain perfectly?  She is trying so hard to be a “maverick” and be the hip new face of the republican party that it’s verging on pitiful.  Her efforts to modernize and rhinofy the Republican party are all in vain, because, quite honestly, she has no political muscle.  Meaning, she’s not really convincing anyone except for a few readers of her blog and some college kids.

Her latest attempts at making the Republican party more congruous with what she thinks today’s values are include trying to warm conservatives up to the idea of gay marriage.  She has about as much luck doing that as I would trying to convince liberals that George Bush was a good president.  In her blog she states that:

If the Republican Party has any hope of gaining substantial support from a wider, younger base, we need to get past our anti-gay rhetoric. As you can image, the road for gay Republicans hasn’t been an easy one. Most find the words “homosexual” and “conservative” inherent contradictions, much the same way so many people can’t seem to reconcile fiscal conservatism and the bit-tent philosophy of freedom and justice for all.

Alright Meghan, while I think it’s great you are so passionate about your stance on the issues, a full party reform of the conservative stance on gay marriage is unrealistic.  The overwhelming majority (myself included) of conservatives live based on Christian values, and a negative view of homosexuality is certainly one of those values.   Having said that, and in Meghan’s defense, it’s also contradictory for a conservative Christian person to discriminate against a homomsexual person due to their “love interests”.  While I don’t condone homosexuality, in my opinion witholding their rites in any form is just like the racial discrimination of the 60s.  From there, it depends on whether you think marriage is an act of state or of the church.  I side with it being an institution of the church, and seeing as Christianity (among other religions) frown upon homosexuality, they should not be forced to perform a same-sex marriage.

They do look awfully similar.

Meghan Does look a lot like her father. I wonder which chromosome maverick is on?

Anyway, my own views aside, what Meghan is trying to do is unrealistic, to put it nicely.  At a time when the Republican party is going back to the conservative roots that brought us success under Reagan, she can’t preach her moderateness and expect much of a following.  I’m sure you’ll see Hannity (blah.) rip into this at some point this week, so be on the look out!  I’m sure we’ll hear more on this in the near future.

What do you think?  Do you think it’s realistic for the Republican party to become accepting of homosexual marriage?  Leave your comments below or e-mail us at theconservativejournal@gmail.com. Also, if you are having any trouble understanding what I’m trying to say, please ask me to clarify!  I have tendancy to go off on unconnected tangents, and I would hate for someone to be confused on my view on any matter.

Thanks for reading!

Poll of the Day Results

  • 54% of those that voted felt that Levi lied throughout the interview to extend his time in the spotlight, 29% don’t care enought about Levi to even read the recap/watch the clips, and the remaining 17% actually thought it was a good interview.  Maybe they were confused about which interview I was talking about?

April 5th- No Poll

April 6th- What Do You Think of Barack’s Reliance on a Teleprompter?

  • After Barack’s mess up during a town hall last week, it was quite clear that he was relying to heavily on his teleprompter.  72% of those that voted agreed with me in saying that it’s ok to use a teleprompter, as long as you actually know what your saying.  17% think that he should never use a teleprompter, which is unrealistic in my eyes, and the remainging 11% said that we should leave him alone.

April 7th- Who Was Your Favorite On American Idol?

  • For the 3rd week in a row, Adam Lambert leads the favorite idol poll with 28% of those that voted chosing him as their favorite; up 11 percentage points from last week.  The rest of the Idols stacked up like this: Allison Iraheta received 14%, Danny Gokey recevied 12%, Kris Allen received 10%, Matt Giraud recevied 9%, Anoop Desai received 5%, Lil Rounds received 3%, and Scott MacIntyre received 2%.  Of the remaining 17%, 7% said they miss meghan, and 10% said they don’t watch.  **Fun Fact** The voters in this poll “predicted” not only the bottom 3, but also that Scott would be eliminated.

April 8th- Whose Side Are You On: Palin or Johnston?

  • 57% of voters said they are on the Palin’s side, 28% said they are on the Johnston’s side, and the remaining 15% said they can’t stand either.

April 9th- What Do You Think of the Obama Chia Pet?

  • With all of the outrage over the Obama chia pet, I had to see what everyone thought.  74% agreed with me that there is nothing wrong with and everyone needs to calm down.  14% think it’s racist and horrible, 9% don’t know what a chia pet is, and 3% don’t know who Barack Obama is.  I feel confident they were kidding.

March 28th- What Do You Think of Michelle Obama’s Attire?

  • In one of the closest polls in Conservative Journal history, 52% of voters disagree with me and think the Kids Choice Awards preaching of going green was great.  The remaining 48% think like me, that global warming is simply too controversial to be the central theme of a kids award show.  I compare to making evolution the theme of a kids award show.

Mail Bag: A Vast Array of Textual Remarks

To the elitist snob that likes to e-mail me: Shouldnt you be eating your caviar? Its going to sour.

To the elitist snob that likes to e-mail me: Shouldn't you be eating your caviar? It's going to sour.

Like the title?  I’m just trying to please the elitist snob that sent me an e-mail stating my vocabulary was on par with a grade schooler.  Thankfully, I don’t write this blog to try and sound like a graduate of an Ivey League school, nor do I think it’s necessary to do so.  The person who e-mailed the comment, who wished to remained unnamed, must be drawn to Obama for his use of flowery vocabulary alone, as their is zero substance to his words.  However, I wonder what said poster thought about Obama’s press conference?  It didn’t contain that many “million dollar words”.  Surely they had the same disdain?  Negative.

I will now step down from my soapbox and post some “worthy” comments from the mail box and the website.  Here are the highlights:

New reader Lisa Krempasky, whose blog can be found here, has left several entertianing comments:

On the Michael Moore WikiGate article, Lisa had this to say:

I’m more interested in the day when Moore will be known as inmate 73027963.

Even most of his looney buddies are distancing themselves from him

And on “More From the World of Meghan“, she said this about her moderateness:

Progressive republican…good one.

I’m also very glad for her depth of economic analysis in her affirmation that the president is taking the economy serious. I feel much better now.

Trust us, Lisa, we feel better too!

Neoavatara, whose blog can be found here, said this about Charlie Rangel:

Rangel is an embarrassment. The Democrats are currently protecting him, which makes it even worse. It is silly, really, because if Rangel left, his district is a safe Democratic seat. The Democrats are making the same mistake Republicans did: If someone does something wrong, don’t protect them. People should be responsible for their actions.

Neoavatara also had this to say about Barack reading this blog:

I think the problem is that Obama’s teleprompter needs to read your site…otherwise there is no way you will get an apology.

I must agree with you there.  Maybe I can go submit it to his teleprompter’s blog, which can be found here.  That blog is hilarious, by the way.

And finally, I’d like to just direct everyone to the last Mail Bag post, where a nice discussion over Barack’s “Special Olympics” gaffe is located.  It’s a great little discussion that everyone should take part in.

What do you think?  Which post by a user is your favorite?  Leave your comments below or e-mail us at theconservativejournal@gmail.com and you could end up on a post just like this one!

Thanks for reading!

More From the World of Meghan

Meghan McCain followed up her busy past few weeks with an appearance on Larry King Live last night, covering everything from her tattoo to the Laura Ingraham dispute.  It’s an interesting interview, I must say.  I’m not going to bore you every detail (If you want the full transcript, AOL has it here.) but here are some of the things I consider the highlights:

  • She said that anyone who doubts that Obama isn’t taking the economy seriously is ridiculous; however, she fears he is on the verge of over-exposure in the media, which could alienate older supporters.
  • She supports Obama, as does her father.  Who, in case any of you missed this, is John McCain.
  • Says the Republican party is full of differing personalities.  Not all want Obama to fail.
  • She did an interview with Bobby Jindal’s wife, Supyira.  The interview can be found here.
  • She considers herself a progressive Republican (A.K.A. RINO.  Meh.).  She says she’s liberal on social issues; e.g. gay marriage and abortion.  She’s pro-life personally, but thinks people should have that option.
  • Says she agrees with her father on war and the economy and is a fiscal conservative.
  • Somone in an airport told her to “kiss my fat a**” (Got to keep it decent. :),  just as she did to Laura Ingraham last week.  She says that the fued is over as far as she’s concerned.
  • She claimed she didn’t know who Laura Ingraham was before all of this.
  • She thinks Supyira Jindal (Wife of Bobby Jindal) is a better role model than Ann Coulter and Laura Ingraham because the Coulter and Ingraham give off the impression women in the Republican party have to fit into “this one box”.
  • The interview wrapped up with a personal touch: She has a star tattoo on her foot.

I give Meghan a little credit with the Coulter/Ingraham/McCain throwdown because I really do think she handled it well.  However, the girl is a Class A RINO.  I am glad to hear, though, that her “progressive” traits are in social issues rather than fiscal and government size.  At least we don’t have to worry about her voting for bailout upon bailout if she ever became a senator or representative, though I don’t imagine there is much chance of that.

What do you think of the interview?  Were you surprised at the fact that she has a tattoo?  And how about that guy in the airport throwing her words back at her?  Cool guy.  Leave your comments below or send us an e-mail at theconservativejournal@gmail.com.  Also, look for today’s Poll of the Day regarding the interview!

This past week brought many additions to The Conservative Journal, including:

  • Mail Bag, which highlights e-mails and comments worth a second look.
  • The presence of The Conservative Journal on many different blog ranking sites, all of which can be found on the top of the right sidebar.  This week, The Conservative Journal worked it’s way into the Top 10 of several of the ranking sites during the heat of the Meghan McCain saga.  I guess we reported on it the best here? 🙂
  • The WikiGate Project, which is aimed to find the conspirator of the campaign to rid Barack’s Wikipedia entry of anything not deemed 100% good.

Poll of the Day Results

Although the results are in, the polls aren’t closed; you can click on the title of the poll and cast your late ballot!

March 14th- Are You Liberal or Conservative?

  • This could be the most obvious poll that will ever be on the site, but here are the results:  77% of readers of The Conservative Journal are more conservative, while 23% identify more with liberal viewpoints.  To those 23% in the minority:  I’m glad you here!  Rally some more of liberal friends so we get some comment debates going!  Seriously though, thank you to all that voted and read The Conservative Journal!

March 15th- Whose Side of the Fued Are You On?

  • This results of this poll are a lot closer than I expected:  When asked whose side Conservative Journal readers were (Either Jim Cramer or Jon Stewart) on in their little feud, 53% sided with Jon Stewart, and 39% sided with Jim Cramer; with the remaining  8% having no opinion.  I voted for Jim Cramer because I think his show is funnier, but I wasn’t expecting many to vote for him.  Guess everyone agrees?

March 16th- Internet problems prevented a poll on this day.

March 17th- What Do You Think About Laura Ingraham’s Comments?

  • In this poll, 63% thought that Laura Ingraham crossed the line with her “plus-sized model” comment to Meghan McCain, 23% think America needs to lighten up, and the remaining 14% don’t care about either one of them enough to form an opinion.  Once again, on this one I went with Laura Ingraham crossing the line initially, though after hearing the full context of the comments I don’t think they were that bad.

March 18th- What Are Your Views on Abortion?

  • On this random issue, the vote was almost split exactly as the “Liberal or Conservative?” poll, with 74% siding with the more conservative “Pro-life” option, and the remaining 26% going with the generally liberal choice of “Pro-choice”.  Of course, I went “Pro-life” on this one.

March 19th- Do You Support Gay Marriage?

  • Looks like our readers are a little more moderate on this one:  61% voted against gay marriage, with the remaining 39% voting in favor of gay marriage.  Of course, I voted against.

March 20th- What Do You Think of Barack’s Special Olympics Comments?

  • We posted this before news of his apology, and 74% of those polled said that B.O. needed to apologize for his remarks, with the remaining 26% thinking that America needs to lighten up and laugh.  While I did vote that B.O. needed to apologize (glad he did do that), I generally side with America needing to lighten up.  For someone that campaigned on a platform of hope, change, and equality this was a low blow.

Come On, Barack! Well, at Least He’s a Liberal.

I suck like the Special Olympics, says Obama.

"I suck like the Special Olympics", says Obama.

Barack, Barack, Barack. What were you thinking? You can’t talk about how bad you were bowling and compare it to the Special Olympics; especially when you’re the president! I mean, I’m sure I’ve said worse, but you are the PRESIDENT. Geez. For those that missed this little debacle, while Barack was being a cool cat on Jay Leno (DID YOU KNOW HE WAS THE FIRST PRESIDENT EVER TO GO ON A LATE NIGHT TALK SHOW???), Jay brought up his lack of bowling skill. Barack said it was getting a little better but still sucked, and then compared his horribleness to the Special Olympics. I’m sure there were many expletives swirling about in his brain after that little slip, but he should rest easy because he’ll be fine. Why, you ask? Because he’s a liberal, of course! The only people that are going to ever know about this are the viewers of FOX News, listeners of talk radio, the people watching Leno, and people that read conservative blogs online. That’s probably, at the most, 15 million people that will have any idea he said that. Being a liberal nearly makes you impervious to media scrutiny, so he’s got no need to worry.  Oh and don’t forget the White House released that memo that said he didn’t mean to degrade the Special Olympics.  Oh ok, no problem then!  Come on, that’s like calling your mom a stupid fat cow, but then saying you didn’t mean it in a mean way.  How dumb does the White House think we are?  (Oh wait, we did elect the guy. :)).  So rather than hiding behind a White House Press Release, I demand that you, Barack Obama, apologize to America for belittling the Special Olympics.  We’re waiting.

*Disclaimer*

Now I know that on numerous I’ve said America needs to toughen up and not get so offended about stuff, but I think this was over the line.  Making rude comments about physical disabilities is not in the realm of okayness.  And for those that like to e-mail me and say I’m just biased, I spoke out against Laura Ingraham’s comments on Meghan McCain’s weight earier this week.  No, I didn’t say as much about them, but those comments were not anywhere near as offensive.

Just imagine the outrage if Rush or Hannity or Coulter had said that! We’d never hear the end of it.  What do you think of Obama’s comments?  Were they completely ridiculous or do you think it was all in good humor?  Leave your comments below or send us an e-mail at theconservativejournal@gmail.com!
