The Best/Worst of 2009: Get Ready to Vote!

To visit the main page for The Best of 2009 and view a full list of categories and voting links, click here.

As 2009 comes to a close, it’s time for the first annual “Best Of” series at The Conservative Journal!  2009 has been quite a year, so what better a way to close it out than to reflect on the best (and worst) of what we’ve seen over the past 365 days.  Here are the details:

With the exception of a few categories (Most Popular Posts, Top Referrers, etc.), all of the Best of/Worst of are chosen by you.  Votes will be cast by entering your choice in the “Other” blank in the appropriate poll.  This is the easiest way to gather votes easily and accurately.  For the slower readers, there will be an example provided before each poll to ensure you vote in the proper manner.  You may vote for each category once a day, and you don’t have to vote in every category.  Details on what’s eligible for each category will be listed before each poll.  Here are the categories you will be deciding:

  • Top 10 Best/Worst Songs of 2009
  • Top 10 Best/Worst Albums of 2009
  • Top 10 Best/Worst Books of 2009
  • Top 10 Best/Worst Singers of 2009 (Including Male, Female, and Overall)
  • Top 10 Best/Worst Movies of 2009
  • Top 10 Best/Worst TV Shows of 2009
  • Top 10 Best/Worst Websites or Blogs of 2009
  • Top 10 Best/Worst Actors or Actresses of 2009
  • Top 10 Best/Worst Music Videos of 2009
  • Top 10 Best/Worst Live Musical Performances of 2009
  • Top 10 Best/Worst TV Personalities of 2009
  • Top 10 Best YouTube Videos of 2009
  • Top 10 Best/Worst People of 2009
  • Top 10 Best/Worst Politicians of 2009
  • Top 10 Best/Worst Events of 2009

Voting starts as soon as the categories are posted and ends December 31st at 11:59 PM.  Results will be posted by Midnight on January 2nd.  If you have any suggestions for additional categories, be sure to let me know!

After the poll for each category is posted, they will obviously be burried beneath pages of polls.  To view a complete list of categories including links to each category’s poll, visit the “Best of 2009” page by clicking the on the Hall of Fame page, or by clicking here.

The Top 10 Worst People of the Week: Adam Lambert, Oprah, Jon Gosselin, and CBS

This is something new I’m going to start doing with the help of my new writers.  The title is pretty self-explanatory, we’ll just go through and name the top 10 worst people of the week and a little bit about why.  This post will probably be posted on Saturdays, but seeing as this is Thanksgiving week and I’ll be busy Saturday, we’ll go ahead and do it tonight.

10. CBS- After CBS jumped at the opportunity to book Adam Lambert and be the shelter for the “kicked puppy”, they blurred out the Lamber/Male keyboarder kiss, while not blurring out the Madonna/Britney kiss that was shown in the same slide set.  I’m glad they blurred out the Lambert/Keyboarder kiss, but they should have been consistent and blurred both.  Watch out folks, hypocrisy earns you a spot on my list.

9. Google- Go back in time a week, google image search Michelle Obama.  What pops up?  A monkey.  True story.  Google lands on the list because they removed the photo and the website from their searches.  Don’t get me wrong, I find blatant racial attacks to be despicable and unwarranted in today’s society, but come on Google.  There are MILLIONS of offensive images on the internet, why try and play police with this one?  That image has been circulated to millions of American’s by now, and this all making much ado about nothing.  Everyone needs to quit being so dang sensitive.

8. Oprah Winfrey- Oprah started off great by announcing she was ending her tv show……… then she continued by saying it wouldn’t be over until 2011.  Geez Oprah, you got me all excited.

7. “President or Jihad” Billboard guy- Come on man, have some sense!  Sure I’d love for B.O. to show us the birth certificate, but really?  I’m not a member of the “AHH! HATE CRIME” group, I just think it’s ignorant.  I must say, it gave me a HUGE laugh when I first saw it though.  For those who missed this story, read it here.

6. Climatologists dismissing the e-mails- No one can take responsibility for their actions anymore.  3 of the climatologists who were a part of the global warming e-mail scandal last week came out today saying that it was nothing but a smear campaign.  When did “smear campaign” become the word of choice when trying to dodge a sticky situation?

5. Perez Hilton- The fact that I can’t stand him aside, Perez really aggravated me on the AMA’s.  They gave him 10 seconds of screen time and he used it to say “I caught up with Derek Hough….. in the bathroom”.  Perez has a chronic case of pedestalitus; he can say whatever he wants, but the second anyone else steps up, cue the tears and Vlog.

4. Jon Gosselin- He’s just a bully.  His latest episode includes being a bully to his twins for preferring their mom over him.  The two twins said they enjoyed being with their mom more, so Jon through them inside and wouldn’t let the poor girls sell lemonade.  I think he’s just bitter that his 15 minutes are officially ovahhhh.

3. WikiLeaks- I’ve never heard of this website until today, but apparently they’ve discovered thousands of 9/11 texts and have released them to the internet.  Why stir up memories with these messages, some of which were extremely personal and heartbreaking?

2. Keith Olbermann- Uhhhh…. He’s just annoying.

1. Adam Lambert- I’ve never seen anyone more desperate for publicity in my life.  I could tolerate him on Idol, but he took it too far at the AMA’s and continues to take it too far as he does interviews throughout the week.  Adam, you may not be “a babysitter”, but that doesn’t mean it’s fair game for you to force simulated oral sex on some back-up dancer in front of 15 million people.  You may think the the world is carrying out one big hate crime and discriminating against you, but I was just as appalled when Britney kissed Madonna.  Save it for pay-per-view, not a show with a rating of TV-14.

Who do you think is the worst person above?  Leave your comments below or send an e-mail to theconservativejournal@gmail.com.  Don’t forget to bookmark The Conservative Journal and sign up for the RSS Feed and the daily e-mail newsletter.

The Conservative Journal Family Just Got a Little Bigger

A few weeks ago, I sent out an “SOS” asking anyone who was interested in helping me handle this blog to please come forth, take the virtual blogging pen, and write to their heart’s content.  But with no real incentive, who’s gonna do that?  I still blog here because it’s like a child to me; I grew it from a lowly WordPress blog with one post into a lowly WordPress blog with a lot of posts.  So after I posted that plea, I realized it was probably in vain.  However, to my surprise a couple of interesting responsive.  One went a little too far and wanted me to give them blog, which I wasn’t ready for.  But a few others actually wanted to write and help out, and I can’t thank them enough.  So without further ado, here’s a quick overview of the 3 who will be joining me on this blogging adventure:

Michael: College student by day, Conservative Journal writer by night.

Suzannah: You can call her “Mama Suze.” (Pronounced Sooooze)

Angelica: Don’t mess with her.

More on all 3 of the wonderful people when they give me their bios, but here are some more details on how this will work:

  • We’re not really sure how much or what each will be posting, and it probably won’t be all ironed until 2010.  Until then, they will be giving their opinions when we do reviews and stuff.  That’ll be a good way for everyone to get to know them before they start doing independent posts.
  • As I said above, everything won’t be 100% until early 2010.  Until then, posts will continue to say “posted by: Rick” regardless of who wrote it.  If the author is different there will be a note of that.  When everything is together, Michael, Suzannah, and Angelica will all have their own accounts that they can use to post whatever.

I’m looking forward to what’s ahead, and I hope you’re patient with us as we work all of the details out.  If you have any questions, please feel free to leave a comment or send us an e-mail.

Hi Rick, Welcome Back

Hey everyone, sorry for the long absence.  I wish I had a great story to share, but unfortunately I got nothing.  What they say about blogging is true: Once you get in a routine of posting, if you even miss ONE DAY then it’s all over.  I’m the perfect case study for that one.

Just to get this out of the way:  The giveaway is still on.  I didn’t go into hiding to avoid shipping off a brand new netbook on the 31st.  The netbook is sitting in my closet ready to go, actually.  Even though I haven’t been here since the beginning of the month, you can be sure the winner will be notified on the 31st and the announcement will be made the following day.

Now, on to the state of this blog.  I love blogging, and I really want to be able to post as often as I did throughout August and September. That was a lot of fun and I got to meet a lot of great people.  Having said that, I have about zero time to do so.  I need a long break from everything (Christmas couldn’t come sooner) so I can have some time to refuel because when I get home in the afternoon, no matter what I did during the day, I’m just fried.  So here’s the game plan:  I’m going to try to post when I can.  That, however, fluctuates so much that I can’t be consistent and that’s not fair to the (few) people who try and follow this blog.  So, in order to fix that problem I’m looking for someone(s) who would be interesting in posting on the blog as well.  I’d be willing to give you the freedom to write stories about whatever you want; news, entertainment, sports, politics, it’s really just whatever.  So if you or anyone you know would be interested in that please e-mail me at theconservativejournal@gmail.com and I’ll give you more details from there.  Until then, hopefully I’ll be able to post some because I’m starting to have withdrawals.

Thanks for your patience while I work through all of this!

Rick

Thrilling Thursdays Giveaway: You Could Win Glenn Beck’s New Book, “Arguing With Idiots!”

First off, thanks to all those who participated in last weeks “Thrilling Thursdays” Giveaway, the turn out was great and as long as participation stays high I’ll be able to do this weekly.  This week will require a little more brain power, but not by much.  Here are the details:

  • This contest is only open to Conservative Journal Deluxe Members.  As always, anyone is welcome to comment and send in questions/responses on articles, but only Deluxe Members who comment will be put into the drawing.  If you aren’t currently a member and would like to join, clickhere to read the details and become a member now!  It’s free and extremely easy to do.
  • To enter your name for a chance to win, all you have to do is e-mail me (theconservativejournal@gmail.com) what you think the top search term is for people visiting The Conservative Journal.  (I realizes that’s worded a little weirdly, but simply put you are trying to guess what word or phrase typed into Google sends the most visitors to The Conservative Journal).  If you don’t like to send e-mails, you are welcome to live your guess in a comment on this post, but just know that others can see your answers and that will decrease your chances of winning.
  • For this contest, you may submit answer PER DAY.  However, sending in the same answer daily will not increase your score because your name only goes in to the drawing one time, regardless.
  • Be sure and send your answer from the e-mail address you signed up for TCJ Deluxe with because that’s the only way I can contact you if you are the winner.
  • I realize there will probably be multiple right answers, and there will be 5 winners because of that.  If more than 5 guess correctly, however, each name will put into a drawing and the 5 names randomly selected will each win the prize.
  • As far as technicalities, each Deluxe Member is assigned a number in the database of members for all giveaways.  I will use random.org to generate a random number until the number of 5 users who guessed correctly are chosen.  Those users will be crowned the winners of this giveaway and will be notified through e-mail before I announce it on the site.  If the winners don’t respond to the “congratulations” e-mail and provide shipping addresses in 48 hours, I will generate another number and will notify the new winners.  If the new winners don’t claim his/her prize in 48 hours, I will keep the prize and use it in the next giveaway.

The Prize

Finally, the winners of this contest will each receive Glenn Beck’s latest book, “Arguing With Idiots.”  Thanks to a great friend of mine who owns a local bookstore, I’ve managed to purchase five of books for much cheaper than the retail value.

Highlights

Contest: Guess the most popular incoming search term for those visiting The Conservative Journal.
Time Frame: 10/1- 10/8
Open to: Conservative Journal Deluxe Members only
Prize: “Arguing With Idiots” by Glenn Beck

Gook luck and thank you to all who participate!

Video of the Day: Alan Grayson Says GOP Health Plan “If You Get Sick, Die Quickly”

What funny farm is this guy from?  I think we have a Rolland Burris-type situation where a guy just walks into the Capitol and says “I think I’ll be in Congress today.”  What electorate, especially one in generally moderate Florida, would chose such a bozo to represent them in Congress?  Watch the video below:

What do you think of his little presentation?  What’s your favorite YouTube video?  Leave your comments below or send an e-mail to theconservativejournal@gmail.com.  Don’t forget to bookmark The Conservative Journal and sign up for the RSS Feed and the daily e-mail newsletter.

TCJ Journal Honorary Plaque of Fail: Jon Gosselin, ‘Kate Plus 8’

Gosselins:  take your family drama out of the spotlight and work things out.  It’s not right for your kids to let this all play out on national television.  Thank you.

Goodbye Jon.

Goodbye Jon.

It was announced today that Kate will continue “Jon and Kate Plus 8” under a new title; “Kate Plus 8,” and talk about raising 8 kids as a single mother during the show.  Interestingly enough, Jon Gosselin also released apology today for the way he’s treated Kate and even asking to halt the divorce.  Coincidence?  I think not.

I’d love to live in happy land where everything is innocent and good, but unfortunately I do not.  No one is naive enough to think that Jon Gosselin just happened to ask for forgiveness the day it was announced that he doesn’t have a job anymore.  I mean come on Jon, at least wait a week or two.  For being worthless, Jon Gosselin earns the TCJ Honorary Plaque of Fail and a place in the Hall of Fame.  Congrats Jon!

Having said that, Kate’s not off the hook either.  As a single mother, she needs to focus on raising her 8 children, not raising the ratings of her TV show.  Don’t get me wrong, I’m definitely on her side (though she’s probably a bit of a control freak), I just can’t see how she’s going to have enough time to raise the kids and have a TV show about their lives, among other business ventures.

Additionally, the kids deserve some privacy.  They aren’t old enough to say, “I’m not doing this show,” so they’re forced to go along with if that’s what mommy wants.  I can’t imagine the difficulties of going through a regular divorce, and having that whole process play out in front of millions of viewers will make that about one million times worse for the kids.  So Kate, put your (well deserved) desire to get back at Jon aside and do what’s right for the kids.  I’m not going to give you a Fail Plaque yet, but you’re borderline.

What do you think of the Jon and Kate situation?  Leave your comments below or send an e-mail to theconservativejournal@gmail.com.  Don’t forget to bookmark The Conservative Journal and sign up for the RSS Feed and the daily e-mail newsletter.

September 28th News Bits and Pieces: Sarah Palin, Barack Obama, Starbucks, and the X-Factor

News and Politics

Palin finishes memoir, ‘Going Rogue,’ out Nov. 17

Woo, I can’t wait to read it!  The title is very eye-catching; “Going Rogue”, it just really draws you in.  Or it could be that I’m secretly still obsessed with Palin even though her political career advancements, unfortunately, seem close to nil.  Yeah, that could be it too.

Secret Service investigates Obama poll on Facebook

I have a feeling this is going to go down in the books with the Joe Wilson saga as a story that was talked about far too much.  I realize it’s not okay to say make a poll asking if anyone should be assassinated, and chances are the person that made the poll realizes that too.  It was surely meant as joke, though I guess the secret service should probably check it out; better safe than sorry.  I just hope this doesn’t turn into the left’s latest “hate crime” to whine about.  Newsflash: white people can also be assassinated.

Obama wants nation’s children to spend more time in school

I swear, if he does I will chalk him up as being the worst president in our nation’s history.  It wasn’t that long ago when I was in school, and had anyone told me I’d be attending school for 3 extra hours every day, I’d probably just have dropped out.  And that’s saying something because I liked school.  There were would be major fallout if this was changed.  And by the way, I was kidding about the worst president ever thing, though he would rank up there pretty high……………… but that’d be even without the extra school hours.

Starbucks debuts Via instant coffee in U.S., Canada

I’ll try the instant coffee, but I’m probably not going to like it.  The last time I had instant coffee I was extremely to close to expelling my stomach cavity; if that’s possible.  It was Folgers and it was re-pul-sive.  Additionally, I find Starbucks to be vastly overrated.

Entertainment

What’s the big deal about late-night profanity?

Honestly, I didn’t even notice Jenny Slate’s slip-up on Saturday Night Live.  I don’t think it’s that big of a deal, either.  We all make accidents and that was certainly one.  I don’t condone the usage of profanity, but it certainly isn’t a big deal that the f-bomb was accidentally dropped in a skit that revolved on the word “friggin'”.

Simon Cowell may bring ‘X Factor’ to U.S.

I’m all about a good reality show, but I think this may be overkill.  If the U.S. version of The X Factor is too similar to American Idol, both series will surely suffer.  On the other hand, American Idol all year really wouldn’t be that bad in my opinion.

What do you think of the news of the day? al;dkjf

EnergyFLA UPDATE: Answering Your Questions About Energy FLA

This is the second part in the multi-part series detailing the EnergyFLA project.  In this post, I’ll answer the questions readers e-mailed to me regarding the first post.  To read the first post of the series that explains EnergyFLA, click here.

Q: Will the drills used to retrieve the oil be visible from the beach?  (Sandy R.)

A: Only if you’re looking for it through binoculars.  Temporary rigs will be built from 3 to 6 miles off of the shore, which will be far enough away to prevent visibility from the beach.  Also, technology has changed quite a bit since Florida last allowed offshore drilling in state waters.  The unsightly rigs of the late 80s have evolved into the nearly invisible rigs of today.  Don’t worry, the pristine views from the beach won’t be damaged at all.

Q: Gas prices are declining, so obviously supply is sufficient.  Why do we need more oil? (Robert M.)

A: While gas prices have decreased, it’s not because we’re producing more oil.  According to a study posted in the Washington Post, oil consumption nearly doubled production in the U.S., the biggest consumption vs. production gap in our nation’s history.  We turn to other suppliers for our oil; in fact, the U.S. is the number 1 oil importer in the world.

Q: Are we positive that oil is located off of Florida’s coasts? (Cindy C.)

A: Yes.  Some amount of oil is definitely located off of Florida’s coast.  Oil can be found in Jay and Blackjack oil fields, as well as in the Sunniland region.  In between these two areas are 4.5 million acres of unexplored ocean floor that experts believe could hold many more potential oil fields.  The goal of EnergyFLA is to explore potential areas oil and natural gas could be located.

Q: Will drilling hurt the sea life?  (Michael S.)

A: This is one of the most common misconceptions about offshore drilling.  States throughout the gulf manage to balance offshore drilling and a successful fishing industry.  Clearly, if it hasn’t caused a problem for the other gulf states, it wouldn’t cause a problem for Florida.

Q: I don’t live in Florida, why should I support this? (Steve L.)

A: That’s a great question.  Domestic offshore drilling will push the United States closer to energy independence.  We won’t have to rely on foreign nations to give us our energy because we’ll have it all here at home.  Domestic drilling also gives Americans the possibility for potentially lower gas prices.  Who wouldn’t won’t to pay a little less hard earned cash for gas?  Oh yeah, I’m not a resident of Florida either, but as you can see I realize the benefits this will have across the nation.

Q: How many jobs will this project create?  (Matt T.)

A: I think I covered this in the first post, but if you missed it I’ll review.  Offshore drilling in Florida will 20,000 additional permanent jobs.  When you factor in the manpower to get the drills going, you have 40,000 jobs created.  All of the additional jobs in addition to the increase in revenue will be a pleasant boost to Florida’s economy.

I still have several questions that I’ll save for another day, so if you have something you’d like to be answered, send it in!  I’ll be happy to answer it to the best of my ability.

Send in those questions!  Leave your comments below or send an e-mail to theconservativejournal@gmail.com.  Don’t forget to bookmark The Conservative Journal and sign up for the RSS Feed and the daily e-mail newsletter.

This Week at The Conservative Journal: September 27th- October 3rd

Sorry posting was so non-existent Friday and Saturday.  I was extremely busy with work and I didn’t have much free time.  But this week I should be back on schedule with regular posting.  Here’s a look at you can expect for the week ahead:

Sunday

  • I’m pretty much going to play catch up today and post the big stuff I was planning on posting at the end of last week but didn’t get to due to time constraints.  That means you can look for that “Fireside Chat” with a former Barack supporter, and some “Thrilling Thursday” posts.

Monday

  • Look for an addition to the “Hall of Fame”  in the form of a “Seal of Approval” and, if time permits, a response to last week’s EnergyFLA post that answers questions you’ve sent in.  I’ve had a great response to that so far, so if you want to have your question answered, send it to me at theconservativejournal@gmail.com!

Tuesday

  • If there’s any fresh garbage at the DUmp, look for a “DUmmies Exposed” post.  Considering it’s the DUmp, you can be sure they’ll do something post-worthy.

Wednesday

  • Be sure and stop by on Wednesday so you can check out what I’m checking out!  What blog or site will be featured next?  Stop by on Wednesday to find out!

Thursday

  • IT’S THRILLING THURSDAY EVERYBODY!!  I’ll be back on schedule to post recaps of The Office, Parks and Recreation, Saturday Night Live Weekend Update, Fringe, and possibly FlashForward.  I totally forget to record that one last week, so we’ll see if I like it.  Also, I’ll announce the winner of the comment/e-mailing contest and then lay down the details of the next “Thrilling Thursday” contest.

Friday

  • I’m going to go ahead and say it’ll probably just be regular scheduled posting, i.e. the daily posts.  If it turns out I’m free Friday, I’ll be sure to post away!

Saturday

  • Someone’s going to be inducted into the “Plaque of Fail” section of the Hall of Fame, so be sure and stop by with your pitch fork in hand to drive the village idiot into the cave of exile.  Or just read the post.  Whatever works.

Be sure and check out all the exciting things taking place this week at The Conservative Journal!
