Parks and Recreation Premiere “Pawnee Zoo”- Recap and Review

If acting doesn’t work out for Amy Poehler, I see some rapping in her future.  When approached by Ron she started rapping some song and strolling casually around the office before Ron informed her someone was “on fire at the park”.  In typical Leslie fashion, she shoots off to save the day.

According to Leslie, she’s been doing a lot of promotion for the Pawnee Zoo including; a party for an elderly parrot, an attempt to get chimps to throw prizes into the crowd (they just threw crap), and finally a marriage ceremony for two new penguins.  That last one gets her in hot water because the two penguins she marries turn out to be both be boys.  Uh oh.

The next day at the office, Mark confronts Leslie and calls her an “activist” to which she says, “No, no, no, no.”  She then explains that Pawnee is not very receptive to activism,”A garbage man was once suspended for wearing a livestrong bracelet.”  Later, Ron delivers a cake and a shirt sent to Leslie by The Bulge, a gay bar that Leslie says she’s “wasted many nights at”.  Aprille brings in her boyfriend and her boyfriend’s boyfriend who wanted to meet Leslie and thank her for taking a stand for gay marriage.  Though Leslie is resistant, she agrees to go to The Bulge and be their guest of honor.  They hand her a picture of herself colorized like the Barack Obama posters that say “Hope”, only hers says “Knope”.  That’s hilarious.

Later, Marcia Langmen of a family activist group enters the office to ask Leslie for her resignation because she used tax payer dollars to push a gay marriage agenda.  Marcia demands either the annulment of the penguins’ marriage, or Leslie’s resignation.  In the midst of all this, Mark asks Ann to go out on a date but she says no because that would be too weird.

That night at the gay bar, Leslie plans to tell the gays present that she was not taking a stand and that she was very sorry.  But she is overwhelmed by her supporters chanting her name.  With all the pressure, Leslie backs off her previous stance of having no stance.  The gays in the bar give her free drinks, and we know how she gets with alcohol.  “You know why tonight’s fun?  Because everyone here is so guy.  Just stone cold gay.”  She’s also very excited because she found two bisexuals and got their numbers.

The next day, Ron enters Leslie’s office and tells her she has to go on “Pawnee Today” and take a stand because Marcia is calling for her resignation.  While Marcia and Leslie are debating she says she just wants her to annul the marriage and then resign.  “Is that it?” says Leslie, “You sure you don’t want to me jump off a building too?  This is why people don’t go into politics, because I bust my butt around here and I have one night of fun and this is what I get!”  Leslie then takes to the phones and quickly finds that the callers are in favor of her resignation.  One caller says “Would you let me marry my guinea pig, because I’d like to.”  Marcia responds, “See, that’s a reasonable concern.”  Leslie replies, “I didn’t murder anyone or have an affair, I just made something cute.  I will not annull.”

In the mean time, the “new and improved” Andy comes back to see Ann.  “I think it would behoove us to try again.”  He says he’s taken an office job and has learned new words,  though we quickly find out that he’s living in a tent at the bottom of the pit.

In the end, Leslie ends up transferring the penguins to Iowa because gay marriage is legal there and they will be happy together.

Thrilling Thursdays: You Definitely Want to Be Here

For those who were following the blog in the spring or late winter, I’m sure you remember “No Politics Tuesday”.  For those that don’t remember/weren’t hear, let me catch you up.  Trust me, it’s not difficult:  Every Tuesday I took a break from discussing anything about politics and posted only entertainment stories, reviews, etc.  Well, after the television shows ended (though to be quite honest it started to crumble a little earlier) No Politics Tuesday kind of fizzled out.  Well, let me tell you right now, I’m bringing it back and this time it’s better than ever.

Everyone give “Thrilling Thursdays” a warm round of applause.  Woo!  Since most of the television shows I will recap air on Thursdays, I found it only fitting to switch the entertainment days around.  The new day for fun isn’t called “No Politics Thursday” because I make no promises the day will be devoid of political discussion.  In fact, I posted something about ACORN earlier today.  So Thrilling Thursdays will be a mixture, though mostly entertainment content.

Here’s the scoop on what Thrilling Thursdays will hold:

  • Recaps of “SNL Weekend Update Thursday”, “Parks and Recreation”, “The Office”, and “Fringe”.  These are live blogged, so I’ll be posting the recaps as they happen.
  • At least one music review or book review.
  • The Thrilling Thursdays TCJ Arena Smackdown.  This is going to be really fun.  Starting next week, I’ll be doing a contest exclusively for subscribers.  So if you haven’t signed up, read more about it here, or click here to fill out the registration form (all it takes is an e-mail address and your ready for action!).  The Smackdown isn’t going to be a giveaway, but an actual contest where you have to do something.  Don’t worry, there will be a good prize envolved.  Remember, these are exclusively for Deluxe Members.  Become one free by clicking here and reading the details!

That’s all for Thrilling Thursdays now.  The first full force Thrilling Thursday will take place next week, so make sure your here for the contest!  I’ll make an announcement on contest details next week.

Video of the Day: Susan Boyle Singing Her First Single “Wild Horses” (Cover)

Oh Susan Boyle, I’m glad to see you could get it together for a performance.  I’m rooting for you!  Having said that, I’m not so sure this was the best single choice for bursting on to the current music scene.  But it’s great singing nontheless.

P.S. This is not the song of the day.

Glenn Beck: “We have to refound America!”- His Solution to Fix the Decline of Our Government

To read the update on the “Refound America” project, click here.

A few short minutes ago, Glenn Beck let us all know what he thinks is necessary to save America: refound it.  Using theswine flu impact graphic, Glenn showed us that corruption starts in Washington and spreads with every move the government makes.  When Congress signs over stimulus money, the corruption leaks down to the pet projects and the congressmen and women presiding over them.  From their, corruption gets into the system at the local level, and that’s where we are today: extremely and overwhelmingly corrupt.  To fix it, Glenn says we have to “quarantine corruption in Washington”, by not allowing anything in or out, and imposing a hold on all legislation until we sort through this.

After comparing our future to present-day Mexico, Glenn said we simply need 56 “refounders”; Congressmen and women that will start with their own party and work through the muck of corruption.  Not Republicans that say “Oh, the Democrats are worse”, or Democrats that say “The Republicans are wingnuts”, but American Patriots.

The refounding plan will be detailed more on the Monday “Glenn Beck Program” episode, including how Congressmen and women can jump on the refouding bandwagon.  I’ll have more details as they become available.

What do you think of Glenn’s efforts to refound our nation?  Leave your comments below or send an e-mail to theconservativejournal@gmail.com.  Don’t forget to bookmark The Conservative Journal and sign up for the RSS Feed and the daily e-mail newsletter.

The 9/12 Project: Don’t Forget to Tune-in Today, and If You or Someone You Know is Going, Let Me Know!

The 9/12 Project Logo

The 9/12 Project Logo

Last March, Glenn Beck told viewers of the 9/12 project, the 9 principals and 12 values that we have forgotten.  Today, all the efforts of the 912 project will cap off with rallies across the country, as well as a 2-hour Fox News Special hosted by Glenn Beck at the Washington rally.

If you or somone you know will be attending the rallies, let me know!  If you (or the person you know at the rally) would be interested in doing an e-mail interview about the rally, let me know.  I couldn’t make it the rally, but I’d love to write a post about the experience from the eyes of someone that was their.  Thanks for any that will participate!

If you or someone you know would be interested in doing an e-mail interview about the 9/12 Rally, e-mail me at theconservativejournal@gmail.com!

Ellen Degeneres to Replace Paula Abdul as the New Fourth Judge on American Idol: Could This Be the Big Turn Around They Need?

The new face of American Idol.

The new face of American Idol.

American Idol and Ellen Degeneres shocked pretty much everyone when they announced that she’d be filling in for Paula Abdul on the next season of American Idol.  I know I’m shocked, but very excited.

Many have been saying that giving Ellen the job “degrades the character of the show as she has no musical experience”.  Guys… It’s a karaoke contest, not an official showcase of fine talent.  I personally think that was a brilliant move by American Idol because Ellen will provide much needed humor to the show.  There’s no denying that American Idol, as much as I love it, is faltering in the ratings.  They needed something big to turn things around and if Ellen goes on the show and doesn’t try to act like she knows what she’s talking this could be just what they needed.  I think she’s going to provide for more laughs than any other previous Idol seasons have been able to muster.

With Paula gone, there’s no loving character to nurture contestants.  Ellen can fill that void while being competent at the same time, something Paula always struggled with.  And so what if she has no experience in the music business?  Paula, even with her years in the industry, never made any sense at all.

What do you think about Ellen filling in for Paula permanently on American Idol?  Leave your comments below or send an e-mail to theconservativejournal@gmail.com.  Don’t forget to bookmark The Conservative Journal and sign up for the RSS Feed and the daily e-mail newsletter.

Glenn Beck’s EARTHSHATTERINGLY HUGE Story: Don’t Forget to Tune-in Tomorrow at 5 PM/4 PM CST!

Oh man, Glenn Beck is on a roll lately.  He successfully lead the charge to get rid of nutjob Van Jones, and now he’s got an even bigger story that he plans to release tomorrow during his Fox News show.  The story is so big, in fact, that Glenn says we won’t be talking about healthcare anymore after tomorrow and people will go to jail.  He was very ambiguous with everything he said today, but he did show a short clip that said “SEX” and then it had some clips of a girl with a blurred out face saying something about “male clients”.  Could this be reminscent of the late 90s with Clinton and Lewinsky?

I’ve searched all over the internet this afternoon trying to find some more hints as to what his big story will be about so readers of The Conservative Journal could be ahead of the game, but Glenn and his crew have done a great job keeping everything hidden until the big air-date.

Tomorrow we’ll all see what he has dug up for us this time and if it truly is enough to send people to jail and get our minds off of healthcare.

Tune in tomorrow at 5 PM/ 4 PM CST on Fox News Channel to catch the earthshattering story.

Pros and Cons of Obama’s Healthcare Address to Congress: Yeah I’m Still Not For It.

Now that the healthcare bill has been passed, what does that mean for you?  Click HERE to read an updated post containing an overview of what did and did not make the bill.

Tonight was Barack’s big night to sell healthcare; some even called it his night to sell his next term as president.  With a speech that important, of course you’d expect it to be earthshattering.  Below is my take on the big healthcare pitch to America:

Pros:

  • Whether he was being truthful or not, he put in a good word about our nation’s economy.  Those positive little tidbits are a great change from last Spring when he couldn’t tell us enough that our economy was failing.
  • He did a good job at the beginning by saying single payer was too far left, everyone paying for their own is too far right and we should meet in the middle and act bipartisanly.  If they’ll actually carry out that statement it would be wonderful.
  • He used the common sense solutions to his advantage.  Clearly, no one is going to argue AGAINST laws restricting health insurance companies from denying or restricting coverage once the patient gets sick.
  • He used it as a time to dispell the rumors swirling around healthcare, like coverage for illegals.  Though the claim that illegals aren’t covered drew boos and a “THAT’S A LIE” from South Carolina Rep. Joe Wilson, I’ll take his word on that one until it’s 100% fact that they are actually covered.
  • He surprised me and expressed support for Tort Reform, which is absolutely necessary with or without this bill.  We HAVE to have Tort Reform.
  • Joe Biden and Nancy Pelosi didn’t disappoint (as always) in the background entertainment department.  Joe kept the same perplexed, thinking face the entire 45 minutes and Nancy’s perpetual grimace was in full force tonight.

Cons

  • Barack should be over making jabs at President Bush by this point.  The line about healthcare spending being “less than we have spent on the Iraq and Afghanistan wars, and less than the tax cuts for the wealthiest few Americans” under the previous administration did nothing but entertain a few liberals and further alienate conservatives.
  • The Ted Kennedy nostalgia was not needed.  That just fires up the opposition because Democrats are clearly using his death to further the cause.
  • There were a few outright lies; the bit about the majority of Americans supporting the healthcare reform bill comes to mind.  A simple trip to RealClear Politics dispells that.
  • The whole chapter about the deficit not increasing a penny should probably be let go until he can show us what and where he’s going to squeeze money from.  It’s hard to believe that we’ve got $900 billion we can just slide around to suit this new healthcare system.
  • The idle threats towards those that misinterperate the bill at the end of the speech could definitely have been cut.  It reminded me of when your in high school and that guy gets to be hall monitor and tries to write you citations for things off campus.
  • Some of the sketchier provisions are still in the bill: Public option and mandatory health insurance, to name a few.

Overall, I give the speech 7 out of 10 Elephants; 6 for substance and 8 for delivery.  He got the main points across and that was good for him, but as he said during the speech, there are still many details to iron out.  And until those details (i.e. where he’s pulling $900 billion from) are cleared up, I don’t expect to see any big change in the American people’s perspective on the reform bill.

Now that the healthcare bill has been passed, what does that mean for you?  Click HERE to read an updated post containing an overview of what did and did not make the bill.

Video of the Day: Paramore Singing “Use Somebody” by Kings of Leon

Here’s a great video of Haley Williams of Paramore singing “Use Somebody” by Kings of Leon.  I love the song in its original form, but Haley Williams is a great vocalist so I like this as well.  It’s a different, softer take on the original.  Watch below:

What do you think of this version of the song compared with the original?

Happy Labor Day Everyone!

Happy Labor Day Everybody!

Hey everyone, I hope you all had a great labor day weekend.  I didn’t have to work today, but I did spend the majority of my day laboring. I had to catch up on some work stuff so I didn’t get much relaxation time today.  I did, however, get to have a great supper with all of my family and it was a lot of fun.  That’s about all for today, but I’ll be back on my regular blogging shedule tomorrow.

Again, I hope everyone had a great weekend!

Thoughts From Around the Blogosphere: Reaction to Van Jones’s Resignation and Controversy

I haven’t done one of these in a while, but there so much fun so I’m about to start again.  For those that don’t know how this works, I google blogsearch “Van Jones” and take a random sampling of the results and clip out important bits, as well as throw in some of my favorite bloggers’ thoughts.  Here’s the blogosphere’s reaction to the resignation of former green jobs advisor, Van Jones:

DPGI- the aftermath

Just put Bush’s name in any of these stories – war, spending, personal associations, agenda, czars, “dictatorship” – and then, recall the panty-twisting furor of the Left from the past eight years. Kind of telling to see the sand in their crotch was Bush, not what Bush did because Obama is following Bush’s path in many ways.

Quipster

The special adviser for green jobs at the White House Council on Environmental Quality apparently believes that his past actions are being used as “lies and distortions,” and are not worthy of scrutiny for the special government position he enjoyed.

Citizens Against Pro-Obama Media Bias

They ranted on and on about the “birthers” and compared them to the “truthers” and lo and behold one of barry’s special advisors is a truther…to begin with.

The Transporter

Van Jones resigns as President Obamas green jobs czar. All I can think of to say is not soon enough, not soon enough. The president should check into the backgrounds of some people before he hires them to save the embarrassment.

Newsreal (I strongly recommend reading this article, it’s one of my favorites regarding Jones)

The point is not that President Obama will not tolerate people with Van Jones’ views to serve in his administration: he obviously will, because he did and he defended Jones to the bitter end. The point is Jones is becoming part of Obama’s increasingly familiar pattern: associate with radical leftists, give them as much power and prominence as possible in their own right, and disavow them only if they begin to hurt your ability to radicalize the system from within.

The Political Inquirer

One down a whole administration yet to go.

Citizen Obie

Van Jones made a mistake. Van Jones did and said some things I think he probably regrets. In fact, I know he does, because he said so. But where I see a mistake, Glenn Beck and the rightist bloggers who carried out this campaign saw an opportunity to tar and feather (and yes, that image is deliberate) the very symbol of the green jobs movement, and to characterize that movement, and by extension the presidency, as a communist cabal intent on imposing a reverse-racist tyranny on good Christian straight White Americans.

Betsy’s Page

How viciously sneaky of the right wing. They dared to use the man’s own words against him.

All American Blogger

I’m not saying I had anything to do with this, but I did write one heck of a blogosphere roundup on the matter.

California Conservative

Conservatives often joke that the Left’s definition of a dirty campaign is using their words against them. That seems to fit with Van Jones’ resignation letter.

The Lonely Conservative

Despite the fact that the MSM completely ignored the news of Van Jones’s past, the radical commie Green Jobs Czar has quit. And of course he’s blaming it on the folks who had the nerve to dig up his past. Not that it was hard.

Glenn Beck

The American people stood up and demanded answers. Instead of providing them, the Administration had Jones resign under cover of darkness. I continue to be amazed by the power of everyday Americans to initiate change in our government through honest questioning, and judging by the other radicals in the administration, I expect that questioning to continue for the foreseeable future.
