Hey, Maybe If Students Hear it From Barack They’ll Listen?- A Conservative In Favor of Barack’s Speech

Barack to School!

Barack to School!

If you haven’t noticed, I’ve been avoiding the issue of Barack’s big speech to school across the nation.  Why you ask?  Well, I’m not in school, nor do I have kids who are, so it really just isn’t high on my priorities.  Today, however, I did find time to read (skim) the transcript.  I mean, I had to; it is the most controversial speech since the last time Van Jones spoke.

What I found was not controversial, not threatening, and definitely not reminiscent of Nazi Germany (Yes, a friend of mine did say that today).  Now, I’m the last person you’d expect to take up for B.O., but I just don’t see the harm.  It’s a speech that covers everything anyone in the school system has been taught since day 1; try hard, do right, and don’t drop out.  I’d feel the same way if anyone else was giving a speech with an identical transcript.  It’s just not that earthshatteringly important of a speech.

Having said that, this speech could be beneficial if the right people see it.  Many children look up to Barack, for reasons beyond my comprehension.  But for whatever reason, they do.  Hearing those same words that have been drilled into their heads since pre-k from him may be the extra push they need.  And while it’s not going to save America’s youth and slash the drop-out rate by a considerable amount, it’s certainly going to help more students than it will hurt.  So take it from this die-hard Conservative; don’t get to worked over this speech.  Sure it’ll take a few minutes out of the day, but it’s not like any classroom in this country works bell-to-bell.  And even if it does take class time, if it even helps one person to stay in school and get an education then it was worth it in my book.

Vote in Today’s Poll of the Day about the speech controversy by clicking here.

DISCLAIMER: As I said earlier, I don’t have children in the school system, so I’m sure parents look at this from a different perspective.  I certainly don’t think my opinion is the governing power.  If you see the situation from a different point of view, let me know below in the comments or send me an e-mail at theconservativejournal@gmail.com.

TCJ Honorary Plaque of Fail: Joe”I Have A Top Secret Bunker In My Basement!” Biden

Joe Biden swapping secrets with his waitor at dinner last week.

Joe Biden swapping secrets with his waitor at dinner last week.

Man, that Joe Biden is a card.  He just can’t seem to get it right, can he?  Joe’s been known for his gaffes over the years; in fact, there are several lists of them circulating around the interweb.  And while I usually think they are hilarious and innocent, this one’s got me a little worried about ole Joel.

Apparently, Joe told a group of friends he was having dinner with about the bunker, which held former Vice President Dick Cheney during and after 9/11.  The bunker is supposed to be top secret to ensure the safety of the VP should anything happen to the president.  Well of course, Joe couldn’t handle a little secret and now the world knows where he’ll be if the U.S. should face a 9/11-like attack in the future.  If his blunder results in the relocation of the secret hideout, it’ll be a real shame considering that in 2002 the bunker was apparently fixed up with the latest epuipment to sustain the VP and his staff after officials saw that it was not fully prepared to handle a crisis situation like 9/11.  Of course, Barack was not at all happy about this incident.  I don’t agree with anything he says, but at least he’s got enough sense not to leak top secret information.

Surely Joe can learn to keep his mouth shut before he leaks something even MORE secret than TOP secret.  But look on the bright side: Unless the people running top secret government stuff have learned their lessons, we can sit tight until Joe is briefed on the happenings at Area 51!  We’re surely in for a treat when he spills that.  And until then, I am honored to present Vice President Joe Biden with The Conservative Journal Honorary Plaque of Fail.

Video of the Day: Wanda Sykes at White House Correspondents’ Dinner

Here’s the (in)famous video of Wanda Sykes at the White House Corresdponents’ Dinner.  As far as the outrage over it, I don’t think it was quite as bad as some are making it out to be.  Or at least, the part people are making a big deal about isn’t the part that bothers me the most.  The “I hope his kidneys fail” line was funny to me because I know she isn’t really wishing death on Rush Limbaugh.  The terrorist line was just not funny or acceptable.  There’s too much else to make fun of other than 9/11.  Here’s the video:

Swine Flu: Never Fear, You Can Still Eat Bacon!

This bacon is perfectly safe for consumption.

This bacon is perfectly safe for consumption.

Your Bacon Is Safe

After seeing days and days of swine flu converage, I kept asking the same question:  CAN I EAT THE BACON??  Well, I am pleased to report that today I heard on the radio that you can in fact eat bacon, as well as any other pork product you’re craving.  So, next time you hear someone on the news talking about how swine flu is threatening to wipe out humanity, just remember that you can still eat bacon.  That’s gauranteed to raise the mood at least 5 points.

Just What Is this Swine Influenza?

Now that I know the bacon is safe, I can begin actually looking at the illness part.  As far as I can tell, this is no different than the seasonal flu, other than the fact that we have no vaccine.  The swine flu can, however, be treated with conventional methods, such as Tamaflu.  So why is everyone freaking out?  Well, I’m not really sure.  Thousands die annually in the U.S. because of the seasonal flu, but so far the swine flu has killed only 1 in the U.S., and about 160 in Mexico.  So the swine flu is no more dangerous than the regular old flu that everyone gets at least once in their life.  I’m no doctor, but from everything I’ve seen and read, there really isn’t much reason to be in a wad about this.  However, the media, the fact that this virus is coming at a time that we aren’t used to having the flu, and the “special name” are all playing a part in this mass hysteria.

The Reason(s) the World is Holding It’s Breathe

Just a rule of thumb:  Take what you hear on the news and divide it by 2.  They very rarely resist from embellishing situations and causing wide spread panic.  It doesn’t help that the World Health Organization has elevated it’s “pandemic” threat level to 5 (there are only 6 steps).  I googled around and could find very little info on this rating, but I did gather that the seasonal flu, the one that kills thousands annually, doesn’t even get a rating.  They just skip over and the scale to “seasonal” status.  So technically, the season flu could kill 90% of the world and still be marked “seasonal”, putting it at a lower level than the swine flu that has killed less than 200.  Like I said, I’m no expert, but this doesn’t seem to add up.  If anyone has an additional info, please let me know!

Another factor playing into the hysteria is the simple fact that we aren’t used to having flu cases in April and into May.  Whether we realize it or not, we get into a routine in everything we do.  It’s ingrained into all of our memory banks that when fall/winter come around, the flu begins as well.  It’s the same with the avian (bird) flu of several years ago.  It never caused any problems, but produced lots of panic throughout the globe just because we weren’t used to it and didn’t know how to react.  This is no different.

Finally, the special name of swine flu seems to just send shivers down our spines.  The other day I was talking to a friend of mine and mentioned the swine flu.  He had little to no prior knowledge of the illness, but the very word worried him.  I can assure, he’s not the only that has ever done that.  I would be willing to bet that if we called the seasonal flu “homo-sapien flu” or “humanoid influenza”, there would be much more of a worlwide stir every year, or at least the first we changed the name.  It’s similar to the point above, we just aren’t used to this.

Bottom Line

Don’t get your britches in a wad over the swine flu!  You can still eat bacon, and it’s not more severe than the regular seasonal flu.  It’s been hyped beyond belief and it’s freaking out America and the world.  Just like bird flu of years past, this will fade and we will still be hear.  Just use common sense when in public (wash your hands, avoid the restroom, etc.  Stuff that you should do anyway).  If you have survived the regular flu, you have the same chance of surviving the swine flu on the off chance you become infected.

Hope this helps and thanks for reading!

The Conservative Journal Seal of Approval: Barack Obama

That’s right readers, Barack Obama receives The Conservative Journals very first “Seal of Approval” distinction.  Isn’t it ironic that some one who I very rarely have anything at all positive to say about wins the first of these coveted awards?

Anyway, Barack acheived this great honor with his surprisingly quick action regarding the Somali pirates taking Captain Richard Phillips hostage.  Though Barack was not the one that actually gunned down the scallywags, he did OKAY the sniper’s “extermination” of the motley crew.  The shoot out resulted in the death of 3 of the 4 pirates, while the lone survivor suffered serious injuries and is now in custody.  It’s truly a miracle that everyone on the hijacked ship made it alive.  That should teach those swashbucklers to live us alone!

Good job Barack!  Hopefully you can do more things worthy of this honorary distinction.

Thanks for reading!

Rick

Also, at the start of this hostage situation, many of us had our doubts on what action our dear Prez would take.  Though I am pleased he got the job done quickly, a cartoon was e-mailed to me during the days of speculation, and I think it’s too clever to not post it.  This is from Dennis “Bones” Evers:

Thankfully, this wasn't the case during the weekend's events.

Thankfully, this wasn't the case during the weekend's events.

If you have any cartoons you have made, or some you think are great, please send them in!  I will be sure to post everything that I receive, as long as it’s appropriate.  Of course, I have a very broad sense of what’s appropriate, so it’s probably fine.

Poll of the Day Results

April 4th- What Do You Think of Levi Johnston’s Interivew with Tyra Banks?

  • 54% of those that voted felt that Levi lied throughout the interview to extend his time in the spotlight, 29% don’t care enought about Levi to even read the recap/watch the clips, and the remaining 17% actually thought it was a good interview.  Maybe they were confused about which interview I was talking about?

April 5th- No Poll

April 6th- What Do You Think of Barack’s Reliance on a Teleprompter?

  • After Barack’s mess up during a town hall last week, it was quite clear that he was relying to heavily on his teleprompter.  72% of those that voted agreed with me in saying that it’s ok to use a teleprompter, as long as you actually know what your saying.  17% think that he should never use a teleprompter, which is unrealistic in my eyes, and the remainging 11% said that we should leave him alone.

April 7th- Who Was Your Favorite On American Idol?

  • For the 3rd week in a row, Adam Lambert leads the favorite idol poll with 28% of those that voted chosing him as their favorite; up 11 percentage points from last week.  The rest of the Idols stacked up like this: Allison Iraheta received 14%, Danny Gokey recevied 12%, Kris Allen received 10%, Matt Giraud recevied 9%, Anoop Desai received 5%, Lil Rounds received 3%, and Scott MacIntyre received 2%.  Of the remaining 17%, 7% said they miss meghan, and 10% said they don’t watch.  **Fun Fact** The voters in this poll “predicted” not only the bottom 3, but also that Scott would be eliminated.

April 8th- Whose Side Are You On: Palin or Johnston?

  • 57% of voters said they are on the Palin’s side, 28% said they are on the Johnston’s side, and the remaining 15% said they can’t stand either.

April 9th- What Do You Think of the Obama Chia Pet?

  • With all of the outrage over the Obama chia pet, I had to see what everyone thought.  74% agreed with me that there is nothing wrong with and everyone needs to calm down.  14% think it’s racist and horrible, 9% don’t know what a chia pet is, and 3% don’t know who Barack Obama is.  I feel confident they were kidding.

April 10th- No Poll
