Congratualtions to Kris Allen for His American Idol Win!

Sorry I coulnd’t post last night, I was quite busy.  But I am pleased this morning to say congratulations Kris, I look forward to hearing his music post-idol.  He’s come a long way from being unknown in the Top 36.  I wish him the best of luck.  Also worth noting, Adam couldn’t have been a more gracious loser last night.  I’m sure he’d probably thought he was going to win deep down (I sure did!), but I think he was truly happy for Kris win the results were announced.  I’m sure he’ll also have success, and I wish him the best of luck as well.

Highlights of the Finale for me in the order I remembered them, if that tells you anything:

• Allison and Cyndi Lauper duet.  Cyndi wasn’t at her finest, but they sounded great together!
• Kris Allen and Keith Urban duet.  Kris outdid Keith on this one.  I could see him doing country/pop.
• David Cook singing “Permanent” for charity.  I thought was a great vocal.  I love the song as well.
• Megan Joy/Steve Martin singing and banjo-ing to his song.  I know Michael was a part of that as well, but this is the highlight section!
• Kara DioGuardi killing Bikini Girl.  And the whole bathing suit.  One of my favorite moments ever.
• Adam/Kris singing “We Are the Champions” with Queen.
• Adam singing with KISS.  Adam’s voice  sounds excellently in this kind of setting.  It’s the songs like “One” that a perpetual screech does not work.
• The one note Fergie hit properly during “Boom Boom Pow” that was incredible.
• The Golden Idols.  I know, I know, they are incredibly corny.  But I also think they are incredibly entertaining.

Lowlights

• Lil Rounds and Queen Latifah.  This was just a whole lotta “okay”.  Quite monetenous after a while.
• The Santana medley thing.  Santana was great on guitar, but I didn’t like these performances.
• “I’m Yours” with all the Idols and Jason Mraz.  I couldn’t be more sick of this song.  Plus I thought it was a Megan Joy/Anoop duet.  NEED MEGAN.
• Rod Stewart.
• Danny Gokey and Lionel Ritchie dueting.  Too “meh”, too old.
• The other notes Fergie hit during “Boom Boom Pow”/”Big Girls Don’t Cry”.
• Michael Sarver’s part in the “Pretty Flowers” trio.

April 19th- Do You Care At All About Barack’s New Dog?

• 38% agree with me in saying that coverage is getting ridiculous, 28% don’t really care if they talk about it or not, 24% think it’s great to hear about their personal lives, and the remaining 10% didn’t he got a dog.  I wonder what rock they’ve been living under?

April 20th- Do You Consider Waterboarding Torture?

• 56% of those that voted think that waterboarding is not a form of torture, 38% think that it is torture, and the remaining 6% don’t know what waterboarding is.

April 21st- Who Was Your Favorite On American Idol?

• Every week so far, Adam Lambert has taken top honors as your favorite American Idol contestant.  This week, however, he passes the crown on to Kris Allen, who received 26% of the vote.  Adam Lambert was close, though, with 25% of the vote.  The rest of the idols stacked up as follows:  Matt Giraud  received 15%, Allison Iraheta received 13%, Danny Gokey received 8% of the vote, Anoop Desai received 4% of the vote, and Lil Rounds came in last with 1%.  The remaining 7% dont’ watch.  Again this week, the voters predicted the bottom two, who both left in a double elimination.

April 22nd- What Do You Think of the NOM Ad?

• 43% of those that voted said that, even though they were conservative, they were against the ad, 37% said it was moronic, 11% thought the ad was great, and 9% don’t know what to think.

April 23rd- Was Carrie Prejean’s (Miss California) Question Fair?

• 68% said that they question was not fair, 21% thought it was fair, and the remaining 11% weren’t sure.

American Idol Top 7 (Again) Recap

Tonight’s wonderful theme on this grand show that is American Idol is:  Disco!  Woo!  This is going to be a night, I am sure.  And thankfully, it appears that we are back to the 4 judge format this week.  That’s good news.  Wow, they got this episode started soon.  I guess they got tired of causing me to miss the last few minutes of Fringe when I have to TiVo it.  Kicking off the show tonight is…

Lil Rounds who is singing “I’m Every Woman” by Chaka Khan.  Oh boy Lil, this is not going to go well.  I don’t understand why she can’t pick a good song.  The beginning wasn’t that terrible, but it’s getting worse.  Yeah that wasn’t good.  Lil will no doubt be leaving us tomorrow night; it’s definitely her time.  Oooh, the judges hate this mess.  But in Lil’s defense, they are being a little too difficult with her.  They’re clearly throwing her right under the bus.  And then backing up and doing it again.  Simon thinks it’s her final night, so he’s glad she enjoyed it.  Yeah, I agree.  Next up is…

Kris Allen singing “She Works Hard For The Money” by Donna Summer.  Wow, this is going to be interesting.  As I’ve said many times, Kris is the only guy that I like left in the competition.  I also think he’s the most relevant contestant left, with the exception of maybe Allison.  And this song proves that even more.  How he can take this Donna Summer and turn it into this cool, acoustic song blows my mind.  Great performance.  Kara thinks the risk paid off big time, Paula indirectly equates him to a a cross dresser by telling him that he “shops in the woman’s department often”, Simon thought it was fantastic, and Randy thought it was great and Kris knows who he is as an artist.  Next up is…

Danny Gokey singing “September” by Earth, Wind, and Fire.  Oh gosh, the first thing that comes to mind is more of those terrible dance moves.  I’m sure the singing will be overdone and I will hate it.  And of course I’m right.  I don’t know what it is, but he just puts me in a terrible mood.  He is more smug than David Cook was last year and his attitude sucks.  The performance wasn’t bad, and he has a good voice.  I just can’t stand him.  Randy thought he worked it out, Kara thought he had great pitch, Paula liked that he showed his brilliance and said he has the sexiest voice, and Simon said he can’t fault the vocals, but thought there was no star power in the performance.  Woo, Simon can’t stand him either.  Of course Paula had to remind everyone he’s still got a spot in the finals.  Ugh.  Next up is…

Allison Iraheta singing “Hot Stuff” by Donna Summer.  Allison is probably my favorite contestant left.  I think after Megan left, I needed some one to fill the “quirk” void that Megan filled, and Allison does that well.  Allison has an incredible voice.  This sounds a lot better than last week, which was still really good.  I hope Allison goes far after Idol, because I think she has great potential.  Man, that last note was incredible!  Randy liked the vocals but not the arrangement, Kara agreed with Randy, Paula thought it was great, and Simon said it was a brilliant performance.  Next up is…

Adam Lambert singing “If I Can’t Have You” by Yvonne Elliman.  Looks like Adam has picked the calmed down version for this week, which surprises me.  This week gave him plenty of opportunities to screech through his 90 seconds.  But I could be wrong, it just started.  This is probably his weakest performance.  Because in all honesty, when you take out the screeching, high notes, wailing, he really isn’t THAT special to me.  It’s not bad, but it’s slow and I don’t think it ever really went anywhere.  Randy starts screaming at me that Adam is a hot one tonight; Kara thought it was brilliant and his most memorable performance?  I was thinking the EXACT opposite;  Paula started a sentence with “You chose to pick a disco song [pause]….” and I was like, yeah Paula, they all did;  Simon thought it was original and memorable.  Man I guess I was watching something else.  Oh well.  Next up is…

Matt Giraud a.k.a the man of many chances singing “Stayin’ Alive” by the Bee Gees.  Oooh Matt Giraud.  I do not enjoy his singing in any way shape or form.  I don’t know why he continues to assault us with his terrbile falsetto.  It’s just so horrible.  Oh Matt, this is a mess.  It’s all over the place and the constant little vocal add-ons and dragging notes out for 10 minutes apeice is not working out.  Sorry, but I think you are gone for good.  Randy thought it was the best group of 7 they’ve had.  Ummm… no.Kara likes to see him move (hopefully out the door), Paula says he’s staying and something about bowling, and Simon didn’t like it.  Next up is…

Anoop Desai singing “Dim All The Lights” by Donna Summer.  Man Anoop is boring.  He managed to turn a disco song into a snooze fest.  This is a real sleeper right here, I’ve gotta say.  And just when I was starting to like him.  It improves as it goes on, and there was a really good note in there that he held for a while.  It definitely got  better as it went on, with the exception of the last night, but overall it was boring and just okay.  Randy thought his voice was awesome and replayed what he said about the top 7 being awesome, Kara thought the song choice was great, Paula said a lot that meant nothing, and Simon disagreed with everyone and said it was mediocre at best.

April 11th- How Do You Plan To Celebrate Easter?

• 34% of those polled said they were going to spend time with family;  29% said they’d be attending Easter Services at church;  17% said they would be hunting easter eggs;  14% said they would be traveling; and the remaining 7% wrote in their easter plans, which included going to the beach, shopping, and visiting relatives.  In this poll, voters could pick more than one answer.

April 12th- Do You Think Barack Bowed?

• 46% of voters in this poll thought that Barack did bow to King Abdullah and meant something by it;  35% agreed with me and said that while he did bow, it was more than likely because he didn’t know better;  15% say he clearly did not bow;  and the remaining 4% couldn’t tell.

April 13th- Do You Think Barack Acted Appropriately with the Pirate Situation?

• 48% of voters thought Barack did act appropriately, 35% thought that he did not handle the ordeal well, and the remaining 18% wasn’t sure.

April 14th- Who Was Your Favorite On American Idol Tonight?

• For fourth week in a row, Adam Lambert won our ‘American Idol’ poll with 29% if the vote, up 1 percentage point from last week.  The rest of the Idols stack up like this:  Allison Iraheta received 17%, Kris Allen Received 15%, Anoop Desai received 14%, Danny Gokey received 8%, Matt Giraud received 5%, and Lil Rounds received 3%.  The remaining 11% don’t watch.  The voters predicted the bottom two again this week, but failed to predict the bottom vote getter, though the judges saved him anyway.

April 15th- Do You Think It’s Possible to Keep the Pirate Situation Under Control?

• 45% of voters said that they do not think there is anyway to prevent these pirate attacks from occurring;  41% said they thought something could be done to curb the attacks;  and the remaining 14% don’t know.

April 17th- Did You Participate In a Tax Day Tea Party?

• 43% of voters said they did not participated;  39% said they did participate; and the remaining 17% didn’t know what that meant.

American Idol Top 7 Recap

Woo, the top 7.  In my few years watching the show, I can never remember being this UNexcited about an episode.  The days of Carly Smithson are over, my friends.  Yes I’m still bitter.

Enough with the past, let’s move on tonight’s waste of an hour of my life.

The theme tonight is Idols at the Movies, and Quentin Tarantino is there.  Gah, I can’t stand him.  He takes Ryan’s job as saying “This is….. American Idol”, and it’s just obnoxious and horrible.  Ryan introduces the judges (glad to see they aren’t doing those corny walk ins) and we find out from Simon that tonight only two judges will talk after each performance.  Bummer.  But I doubt they can hold that together.

They play a stupid little video about Quentin Tarantino’s career, and I am suddenly less enthused than ever.  Can’t stand the guy and I don’t know why.  Can we just get on with the singing please?  Thanks.  First up is…

Allison Iraheta singing “I Don’t Wanna Miss A Thing” by Aerosmith.  How cool, she’s my favorite on Idol left and this is one of my favorite songs ever.  Except the beginning is being weird.  It’s kinda choppy sounding?  I don’t know, but the beginning is weird.  It gets a little better, but something is still off.  Wow, she just NAILED that high note.  That was awesome.  Well the end was great!  She really pulled that all together in the end.  That was great!  Paula thought it was really good and put her up there with Adam Lambert, and Simon said she has a chance of winning and is the only girl that has a chance at anything.  Awesome!  They’re finally giving her the credit she deserves.  Next up is…

Anoop Desai singing “Everything I Do” by Bryan Adams.  As I said last week, these kind of sappy songs that are kind of slow are Anoop’s strong point.  And as much as like his attitude and lack of stage prescence, this is good.  I’m not going to lie.  I think if he’d lighten up and have fun he’d have a much better chance on this show.  But this performance was quite good.  He didn’t really “rough it up” like Quentin suggested, but it was good!  I don’t think the “roughing it up” would have made it better, either.  So good job Anoop!  Randy says he’s rocking the house right now and Kara thought it was one of his best.  Next up is…

Adam Lambert singing “Born To Be Wild” by Steppenwolf.  Oh gosh, this has the potential to be an utter scream fest.  And right out of the gate, Adam is being vocally absurd again.  The punk rocker look is back, too.  I have to give his range credit because I’m pretty sure he just discovered a ninth octave.  That’s ridiculous.  Some parts toward the beginning were shrieky and scratchy weird, but in the end he hit some pretty ridiculous stuff.  Folks, we have our winner right here.  I’ve never heard the audience cheer so much.  Paula thinks he is great and takes all of the risks, blah, blah, blah.  Simon thinks the audience is either going to love it or hate it, though the vocals were “incredible”.  He prefers last week’s performance.  Next up is…

Matt Giraud singing “Have You Ever Really Loved a Woman” by Bryan Adams.  Matt’s back on the piano tonight, which I think is where he is most comfortable.  The beginning start out pretty good, with the exception of the obligatory wonky run that marks the beginning of all of his performance.  It’s going pretty good for about the first half, but when it starts speeding up toward the latter half he starts to lose it a little.  He has a struggle getting the second part back together, and ultimately it ends with a decent little high note thing.  I think he was just trying a little too hard to infuse soul.  Randy says he lost more parts in there than won, and Kara says he took away some of the core melody when he added all that to it.  I think he may be in trouble.  I think it’s been his time for a while.  He’s just so awkward on stage that it’s almost painful.  Next up is…

Danny Gokey singing “Endless Love” by Lionel Ritchie.  Gah Danny is my least favorite contestant this year.  His personality is just horrible and he’s always so smug.  He’s a decent singer, but it’s not my style.  This week, he’d doing something a little slower.  What is that huge harp doing there?  The song is slowed down and it’s pretty good.  He’s not having to employ that rasp nonsense we usually have displeasure of hearing.  I actually kind of like this performance.  I loved it copared with all of his other crap.  His voice was a little crackly at the end, but he still pulled it together.  Good performance.  Paula thought he pulled it together from the middle to the end, and Simon was disappointed in the weird harp and thought it was boring and a disappointment, though he was a brilliant singer.  Next up is…

Kris Allen singing “Falling Slowly” from the movie Once.  Kris couldn’t decide whether or not to play the guitar, but it looks like he went with no guitar.  The beginning is nice, it’s really slow though.  Towards the middle it gets really good, though.  This is really good.  I think Kris is really relevant and has potential to be really big.  Very good performance.  My second favorite of the night, behind Allison of course.  Randy didn’t think it reallyclicked and thought it was pitchy from note one.  What was he listening to?  Kara thought it was one of his best moments on the show.  Next up is…

Lil Rounds singing Bette Midler’s sappy anthem, “The Rose”.  This is performance is going to sum up everything I don’t like about Lil.  Can she never pick a nonpredictable song?  Something obscure maybe?  That would more than likely send her packing, but I would enjoy it more.  And that’s the goal of the show.  I can’t listen to this and not think of Napolean Dynamite.  Impossible task.  I actually preferred the non-yelling beginning of the song to the second half, which is unlike me because I usually like the bigger notes.  She just really doesn’t have the voice for that.  Carly Smithson, however… Never mind.  I need to move on.  This was actually the song I like most out of Lil’s long list of over done karaoke tunes.  Paula said something I didn’t understand, and Simon though it was all wrong.  He went on to say that she is not the artist they met at her audition and that he is getting frustrated.  Lil had to have her little diva back-talk rant, that totally erased the fact that I didn’t necessarly hate this performance.

• 54% of those that voted felt that Levi lied throughout the interview to extend his time in the spotlight, 29% don’t care enought about Levi to even read the recap/watch the clips, and the remaining 17% actually thought it was a good interview.  Maybe they were confused about which interview I was talking about?

April 6th- What Do You Think of Barack’s Reliance on a Teleprompter?

• After Barack’s mess up during a town hall last week, it was quite clear that he was relying to heavily on his teleprompter.  72% of those that voted agreed with me in saying that it’s ok to use a teleprompter, as long as you actually know what your saying.  17% think that he should never use a teleprompter, which is unrealistic in my eyes, and the remainging 11% said that we should leave him alone.

• For the 3rd week in a row, Adam Lambert leads the favorite idol poll with 28% of those that voted chosing him as their favorite; up 11 percentage points from last week.  The rest of the Idols stacked up like this: Allison Iraheta received 14%, Danny Gokey recevied 12%, Kris Allen received 10%, Matt Giraud recevied 9%, Anoop Desai received 5%, Lil Rounds received 3%, and Scott MacIntyre received 2%.  Of the remaining 17%, 7% said they miss meghan, and 10% said they don’t watch.  **Fun Fact** The voters in this poll “predicted” not only the bottom 3, but also that Scott would be eliminated.

April 8th- Whose Side Are You On: Palin or Johnston?

• 57% of voters said they are on the Palin’s side, 28% said they are on the Johnston’s side, and the remaining 15% said they can’t stand either.

April 9th- What Do You Think of the Obama Chia Pet?

• With all of the outrage over the Obama chia pet, I had to see what everyone thought.  74% agreed with me that there is nothing wrong with and everyone needs to calm down.  14% think it’s racist and horrible, 9% don’t know what a chia pet is, and 3% don’t know who Barack Obama is.  I feel confident they were kidding.

American Idol Top 8 Recap

Thanks for joining us for “No Politics Tuesday” at The Conservative Journal!  The play-by-play for American Idol’s Top 8 Recap starts right here!

Alright, so the theme is songs from the year the contestant was born.  Ryan says that’s a fan favorite?  I can think of many others I prefer to this one.  Some pictures of the judges as children are flashed across the screen, and then it’s capped off with a picture of Ryan, who was a funny looking little kid.  Then it’s right off to the start of the show with…

Danny Gokey singing “Stand By Me” by Mickey Gilley.  Well, as someone who does not Danny at all, I will admit this is good.  He isn’t yelling or anything and his esophagus doesn’t sound like it’s going to fly out of his mouth.  Sometimes when he sings I get this strange feeling he is in extreme pain.  There are a few parts in the middle that are weird and field with some bizarre kind of scatting or something.  Good performance even though I don’t like him at all.  Randy and Kara think the arrangement was weird, but thought it was great; Paula loved it; and Simon thought it was great. Next up is…

Kris Allen singing “All She Wants To Do Is Dance” by Don Henley.  I’ve said this many times, but I’ll say it again: Kris is the only guy on this show that I can stand (generally).  He wanted to be a taxi driver as a kid?  That’s hilarious.  Kris is singing with his guitar in the middle of the crowd, and the beginning is weird.  The words sound kind of jumbled or something?  But overall it’s good.  It definitely improves as it goes on.  Not his best, and I think he is better suited on slower songs, but it’s still good.  Kara thought it was “jazz/funk homework”?  What does that mean?  Paula thought it was good, Simon thought it was indulgent, boring, forgettable, etc, and Randy didn’t like the arrangement.  Next up is…

Lil Rounds singing “What’s Love Got To Do With It” by Tina Turner.  Lil’s mom reminds us several times that her name is really Lil.  Okay?  No one was arguing with you about it woman.  Lil has that “diva” package that is always present on Idol, but she’s just not as good as the one’s in the past.  The opening was extremely shakyl; almost like she was nervous.  It got a little better as it went on, but I just don’t think she’s ever going to be REALLY good.  She doesn’t have the “chops”.  Paula rattles on something but ultimately means Lil didn’t make it her own and it was karaoke; Simon says they aren’t looking for second or third rate Tina Turners; Randy reminds everyone Lil is good; and Kara says she needs to become an artist.  I’m sick of the judges saying “Alright everyone, Lil is awesome, buuuuut she sucked tonight.”  If you suck every week you are not awesome.  Next up is…

Anoop Desai singing “True Colors” by Cyndi Lauper.  Anoop apologizes for being a cocky jerk last week.  Oh gosh, the lats time this song was on American Idol was when Haley Scarnato butchered it a few years ago.  It’s odd that I remember that.  Anoop does a nice job on this one.  He has this pattern of being horrible and then coming back with something that’s actually pretty good.  The judges loved it, and didn’t really say anyting important.  Though Simon did agree with me and call me him a “yo-yo”.  Good job Anoop.  Next up is…

Scott MacIntyre singing “The Search Is Over” by Survivor.  Scott is singing with his guitar this week, which is nice change for him.  Scott is just not a great a singer, nor is he relevant to today’s music scene.  It sounds really pitchy to me throughout the whole song, then he goes for this big note and it’s just a big screech.  I’m not a fan of Scott as a singer, though he has a great personality.  Kara nicely tells him it was terrible; Paula gives him credit for leaving the piano; Simon tells him it was bad, Scott says it wasn’t THAT bad, Simon says “Yes, it was THAT bad.”  Next up is…

Allison Iraheta singing “I Can’t Make You Love Me” by Bonnie Raitt.  With Megan gone (I’m still upset), Allison is by far my favorite.  She starts out really strong.  Man, she is a great singer!  I love her voice, the whole rock thing.  It really suits her.  Wow, I really like this.  That big note near the end was really strong.  One of Allison’s best so far, and my favorite of the night by a mile!  Paula thought it was “Allison” and great; Simon thought it was very good but doesn’t think she’s likeable?  What the heck Simon, Allison is awesome.; Randy thought she reminded her of Kelly Clarkson, but needs to fix her personality; and Kara thought it was great.  Next up is…

Matt Giraud singing “Part Time Lover” by Stevie Wonder.  Matt starts out really strongly, but then after he gets into the more upbeat part he pulls a goat vibrato/singing-on-the-washing-machine note.  If he could just make it through one song without doing that.  It get’s better after that (until this weird high-pitch-growly nonsense), but then get’s better after that.  In all seriousness though, the performance was quite good.  Only two goaty notes during the whole song; very impressive.  The judges loved it, though they are clearly being rushed.  Next up is…

Adam Lambert singing “Mad World” by Tears for Fears.  Calmer Adam is back this week (thankfully), so hopefully there won’t be any screeching or wailing.  Adam is doing a really good job.  A really really good job.  Technically speaking, he has one of the best voice I’ve ever heard.  It’s just not my thing, generally.  But this performance is really good.  I think he’s probably going to go all the way.  They’re pushed for time so all they can do it let Simon give him a standing “O”.  That’s quite an accomplishment.

March 28th- What Do You Think of Michelle Obama’s Attire?

• 82% of votes said they are like me and have ZERO problem with the First Lady showing a little arm, while the remaining 18% want to slap some slap sleeves some leaves on her.  Come on people, it’s the 21st Century!

March 29th- What Do You Think of the KCA Green Movement?

• In one of the closest polls in Conservative Journal history, 52% of voters disagree with me and think the Kids Choice Awards preaching of going green was great.  The remaining 48% think like me, that global warming is simply too controversial to be the central theme of a kids award show.  I compare to making evolution the theme of a kids award show.

March 30th- What Do You Think of the KCA’s Hypocrisy?

• Naturally, 88% of voters said the hypocrisy the KCS’s showed at their after party was horrible.  12% of voters, however, think it’s fine to talk about saving the planet like it’s the biggest deal in the world, and then haul thousands and thousands of paper plates, plastic cups, etc. to the dump.

March 31st- Who Was Your Favorite on American Idol?

• For the second consecutive week, voters chose Adam Lambert as their favorite with 17%,  Kris Allen was in second with 15% of the vote, Danny Gokey and Allison Iraheta tied with 13% (Danny had more actual votes though), Lil Rounds had 12% of the vote, Scott MacIntyre had 10% of the vote, Anoop Desai received 8% of the vote, Megan Joy received 6%, and Matt Giraud came in lats with 4% of the vote.  The remaining percentage said they don’t watch.  Unfortunately, we wrong and Megan Joy ended up leaving American Idol.  She will be missed.

April 3rd- What Do You Think of Bill O’Reilly’s Boycott of Sean Penn?

• 41% of voters said they are also boycotting Sean Penn, 35% understand why Bill is doing it, but aren’t boycotting Sean, 18% think it’s stupid, and the remaining 6% don’t know/don’t care.  I think I fall into the “good for Bill” cateogory.  I don’t watch Sean Penn movies, but just because their topics don’t interest me.
